I learned from just playing with it (no merl), but I don't even know half of what it's capable of so it's perhaps not the best approach

I did buy one of those massive Photoshop books a few years ago but it was so daunting (and boring looking) that I just dipped in and out of it when I found something I couldn't do

Adobe Photoshop classroom books, it teach you the basics and you can go from there. However, like Andy pretty much taught myself and looking online for tutorials.

you can't learn from a book, imo, you need to use the tutorials and just get more and more practise.

however, remember it's an industry standard tool, so unless you intend to use it as part of your career choice don't expect to become an expert.

oh, and most of all - remember that really, it's an enhancement tool. you can't polish a turd.

The Classroom books and most Photoshop books pretty much show you and teach you lesson by lesson what to do. Its not a case of reading the book and then winging it.

And you're wrong, you can polish a turd and make it something beautiful - look at any fashion rag.

I exagerated at my photoshop knowledge to get a job too. Just looked at online tutorials if I got stuck Laughing out loud

The way I started was to think of something you want to acheive and just follow online tutorials

After doing that a few times, you get to know what each tool does and you just progress from there.

I spend about 6 hours a day in photoshop (for my job) and there are still areas of it that I don't use. Most of the books show you stuff that you wont ever need, so using google for specific stuff is far better.

as for learning photoshop, check out http://www.lynda.com for tutorials + what andy said, you learn the most by spending lots of hours testing things out for yourself.

a vast amount of work is required pre-shoot for a truly beautiful image, imo. all too often, clients pass on skitty images and assume photoshop can do all the work - it can't.

I can work out how to do that i reckon... I want to be able to get more creative and be able to create things that are seen on flyers. Is photoshop what I need for this? I'd prob need to get myself a tablet too right?

Its not true though my tutor at Uni did some absolutely amazing things with different comps and using channels/masks to transform a rubbish model into something really nice.

you dont need a tablet yet, and you could also look at illustrator.
But as jet says get stuck into tutorials , online is great.

Get a dual monitor setup if you want to buy anything, this helps with online tutorials and working alongside. Tablets are great if your used to them or gifted with a pen in your hand and want to create artwork. I brought a wacom intuos 3 a few weeks ago, still not really used it much and i have been working in PS last 2 nights heavy on logos and branding so didnt need it.

are we talking photoshop for editing touching photos here or vector art?
