PS3 release details

Sony bigwig Kaz Hirai has announced that the PS3 will go on sale in Europe on 17th November, and revealed more about its price and controller.

The release date is scheduled to be a week after its Japanese debut, and is the same as the US launch.

There'll also be two versions of the console: one with a 20GB hard-drive going for $500 (£270), and a 60GB model that will ship for a not inconsiderable $600 (£325).

Sony's clearly hoping that the incorporation of Blu-Ray – which is the reason why it's been delayed from the original Spring launch – will persuade people to stump up $100 more than the most expensive Xbox 360.

There was also surprising news about the replacement for its ‘boomerang' controller. Instead, the PS3 will come with a gyroscopic affair which senses movement, which sounds remarkably similar to the Wii's wand. It looks like Nintendo isn't so left-field after all.

Sony's also promised to avoid the supply problems that dogged the Xbox 360's launch too – 2 million units will be available for the worldwide launch, with another 2 million to follow by the end of the year.

I don't like the PS2 one as it is. The new one with no vibrate function is a big ommision and I really dont fancy sitting there flicking that thing around like a girl trying to play street fighter II. Just wait until your mates or gf are knocking you deliberately to put you off Laughing out loud

By all accounts , its going to be the same style as the PS2 pad ( not the boomerang one anymore ) But with gyroscopic functionality a la Nintendo Wii .

pricing alot higher for european launch. its

20gb ver is 499 euros (£341 so prob be ~ £349)
60gb is 599 euros (£409 so prob be ~ £399)

thats alot of money for a console. and no vibration on pads cause of the patent problem. not alot of exclusive games aswell.

It's not just a games console the money is buying though. It's a home cinema kit with a blu-ray (HDFormat's competitor) dvd player. I reckon for that price and the 60gb hard drive, IF it records TV and dvd's it might just justify it.

yeah i think i will go for a 360 aswell, as it takes a good year at least for the deent games to start arriving. Namely Halo 3 on the 360. rather than just play ps2 ports with tweeked graphics on an overpriced ps3

But you then have to fork out for the Blue Ray movies. Fine in a couple of years but I doubt that will bother anybody really. also the 360 HD-DVD drive add-on is USB so I would think there will be 3rd party Blu-ray drives available at a later date for that.

You sure on this? I heard it will at least be able to record TV (and HDTV) onto the harddrive Sky+ stylee (Pause live tv etc).

It also only has one HDMI socket, which is pretty shit as by the time blu-ray becomes standard everything else will run from HDMI sockets as well and you're only going to be able to plug one thing into at at a time.

Cost cutting and STILL charging £400ish.

Better off getting a Wii to play games on and a blu-ray or HD DVD player to play DVD's. Everyone will have or has got Sky+ anyway so recording onto its hard drive wont be needed.

No point saying that to people though, as playstation is cool, it's great, nintendos are for kids, heres my money, great marketing again Sony...

The PS2 was marketed in a similar kind of way when it was first released. Newspapers were publishing articles on how in a few years time it would be wired into everything else in your home. Did it ever really come to frutation... no. I use mine to play games and have ocassionaly watched DVDs on it.

They should make consoles to play games, because that's the point of them, forget all that other rubbish.

The Xbox with a modchip moved all that on thought. XBMC is quality
