I never tip the card machine, either. I just assume if you tip on the card machine, it goes straight to the company rather than the waiter that actually served you. Always leave the money on the table if i cant give it to them directly.

Worked as a waiter a while back and we got our tips through our wages when people used the card machine. I know a few restaurants that the money goes straight to the company, think Frankie and Bennys do.

Some companies give them the tip but its a pain in the arse and they get taxed and no waiter/waitress wants you to do it that way.

What's the different between tipping someone who has given you good personal service in a shop(not Crisps) and tipping a waiter? The chef is the one that cooked the food.

At one restaurant it was honestly the best meal I had ever had, so we asked to speak to the chef afterwards and he was truly thankful of the appreciation of his food and so I gave the tip directly to him as well as a smaller one to the serving staff.

In my experience of working in restaurants, the chef is paid the most, usually the same as the management. Waiting staff are on minimum wage.

Wouldn't be great if the chef started undercooking chicken because tips were down that day.
