There may already be a thread for this but I can't find it. I have a Sony hi-fi/ stereo/ seperates system (whatever it's called) and I got rid of the speakers I had for it when I redecorated because they were massive and I want some new/ better ones. Now I don't know much about audio equipment so I don't really know what I should be looking for, how much to spend etc. Can anyone please point me in the right direction or recommend me something? Also, will a wireless set-up have a massive negative imapct on the sound quality? |

Best for your money would be a set of active monitor speakers. Generally used for home studios. 40 or 60 watt for about £100-150. |

Thanks for the help, I think I'm going to look into those Wharfedales, seem to have had a load of positive reviews and very reasonable price-wise. |

Wharfedales can be had here for cheap: http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/2197 Only thing with them though is that they look dated. I would go for these personally: http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/product_id/5694 They are also award winning speakers: http://www.whathifi.com/review/Q-Acoustics-2010/ I've got the older version of said speakers and they are brilliant and I've just got the new ones for a customer who is over the moon. |

Nice one, I'll look into those too, although I thought the Wharfedales looked alright in the Walnut finish. |

Yeah, just depends on the rest of your decor really! Either way, both really good speakers. |

The only problem I have found with monitors is that the don't have much low end, but most are meant to have a sub hooked up. |

Short version: Monitors have as flat a sound signature as possible for mixing purposes to give a (close to) true representation of sound and particularly levels at a very close range and direct angle. Purpose built home Hi-Hi speakers are designed to be warmer and have more of a curved response for longer distances and wider listening angles. |

They're also really draining to listen to and make lots of music sound a bit harsh/flat |

That said, most the entry level monitors and Wharfedale types are not really monitors at all and have a much easier signature. They're just playing on the fact that "pro-sumers" want to buy monitors because they think they sound better. |

Fair play, makes sense. I use them for laptop/decks so obviously I'm stood right infront, thus a wider listening angle isn't necessary. Quite different to a home stereo which is more than likely sat in the corner of a room and the listener is elsewhere. |

I've just brought a pair of bowers and wilkins 600 series speakers off ebay... Can anyone recommend me a good amp that would work with them? Preferably one I could pick up second hand for under £100... |

Just so I can move them from one room to another fairly easily, not for the bus or anything. I'll have a look, cheers |
