Please help! Next month is my bf's 30th birthday, and I want to take him for a special meal. The criteria for the restaurant is: • Must be in Leeds city centre, or Wakefield Does anyone know any restaurants that will fit the bill???? My initially thought was, of course, Bibi's – and although I love it, my boyfriend hates it! (He thinks the food is horrible and too expensive) Any suggestions would be gratefully received! |

Bibbies fits the bill, but the food can be hit an miss, so I can see ya blokes point on that, not pricey though. Go to The Farsyde in Ilkley, top food, great chef, just a slight treck for ya |

Hang on, you want a place like that in Leeds or WAKEFIELD? You ain't going to find a place like that in Wakefield. I was just thinking the same thing. The place is a fucking dive. If you want to spend time at the table book it for a later time and they wont want you out after your meal because their wont be another sitting. |

Anthony's or Chino Latino is your best bet. Both are very nice/fit the bill. |

Plush is a real nice place. nice ambience in the upstairs lounge bar with a live piano so didn't mind the wait for our table. i'd recommend it but the missus was a little disapointed with her meal so we've not been back. |

Yeah plush is shit hot, well nice atmos and if you get board of the mrs, wait for her to go to the toilet (theres a strip club next door). As for other restaurants in leeds Chino Latino is good or if you like tapas Viva Cuba has gotten some good write ups. If you want champagne go to Restaurant Bar and Grill in the old post office building, in city square. Dino's Italian restaurant under the train station is also very good and has a quality atmosphere. All depends on how much you wanna spend. |

I have 2 recommendations for you. First would be the main Anthony's restaurant on Boar Lane/Travelyn Sq., but depending on when you want to visit, you'll need to book early (they're usually booked anything up to 2 months in advance for weekends). The quality of food hasn't dropped - i've visited since they opened right through to now and they've just installed a brand new kitchen as well to my knowledge. It's contemporary European cuisine and of a v.high standard (head chef Tony Flinn worked at el Bulli in Spain prior to opening this establishment). The tasting menu would be a good choice if this is your first time visiting. I also took my missus there for her birthday last year and if you ask nicely and in advance, they can get a sous chef to make a birthday cake which is served at the end of the dessert/cheese course for you to eat or take home.. here's a photo:
The quality of service has dropped since they opened IMO, it's by no means poor or sub-standard for a restaurant of this calibre but in comparison to when they first opened, it's a less personal service, but that's just my opinion. My 2nd recommendation is No.3 York Place, on York Place (yes, just next doors to the Purple Door). Formerly Guellers restaurant, it serves traditional French cuisine with a contemporary european touch. I'd say it's one of Leeds' gastronomic gems as it's relatively unknown despite being there for years. Price wise it's higher than Anthony's, the wine menu is much more extensive (Denis the manager and co-owner is also a sommelier). Whereas Anthony's is more of an 'experience' thing (food is still good, mind), No.3 is where you go in for a proper 3 course meal and come out absolutely stuffed. Quality of cooking is exemplary, the souffle (where the flavour varies all the time) is always pitch perfect. And they change the menu quite regularly too. www.anthonysrestaurant.co.uk Hope this helps - i've pretty much eaten at every single dining establishment in Leeds and these two are my recurring favourites, No.3 wins by a just a bit, but for a birthday celebration, maybe Anthony's is where you might want to visit. There would have been a 3rd recommendation which would have been the Pool Court at 42 The Calls, which was the only place in Leeds to have achieved a 1 Michelin Star but they closed last year as the owners wanted to retire. Anyway, just quite sad that i'm no longer a student in Leeds! |
