Im off there next month for a week and last time I was there it was with work and only for 3 days and just stayed in Union Square. Didn't really get to see much so Im asking for some Fukers help.

Areas to stay? (any hotel recommendation be it budget or 5 star)
Areas/places to visit? (Bars clubs restaurants/cafes stores music venues sights etc any must sees or do?)

Basically anyone with any good advice would on things to do would be very much appreciated. Anything from must go here for good burgers, or here for good Chinese food or go here to see this sight or go here for good hip hop or this store for records etc etc. You get my drift.

I've stayed at the King George hotel 3 times now, it's fairly cheap and very near Union Square and handy for the tram.

Hire a abike and go cycling, there are loads of cycle routes.

Yeah, it is very interesting, and the view of the city from there is stunning.

I got a guide called "The seccret steps of San Fancisco" (or something) and it was all these hidden staircases that take you through the city away from the main roads/sidewalks. It looked pretty interesting as it was a kind of guide to all the things you see and the history. Some of the walks looked more like mountain hikes though, it's VERY hilly in SF.

Edit : This is similar : http://www.sisterbetty.org/stairways/

Laughing out loud

Alcatraz is really good, I did an open top bus tour early on, it helps you know where is what in the city and is worth doing imo. there's short ones and long ones - do a long one that takes you over the bridge. You can get them from union square.

Book alcatraz in advance as tickets sell really really quickly, like maybe before you leave the UK. My uncle got ours for us and I think he did it like a week before we went out.

Chinatown wasn't amazing but worth a wander through. Little italy is really nice, there's a place called mama's which does really nice lunch/breakfast. Do you know where you are staying?

Also went to a giants game which was fun, but I like baseball anyway. Wish we'd managed to reach for a basketball game in oakland.

Well easy mate, the city isn't exactly massive.

Also go to haight-ashbury just for the hell of wandering round. Saw a couple of guys just selling weed on the street, bait as you like.

I went to golden gate park but didn't really see that much of it, apparently there's a fair bit going on there. I did go to the the californian academy of science which is in it, and enjoyed that [yes geek]
