Thinking of going to Thailand sometime early next year. Will probably be on my own, thinking of a beach and avoiding bangkok.

Dont really know much about the beach areas but wanna stay somewhere nice but still near some sort of 'action'.

Anyone been anywhere they would reccommend?

I was there for a few months about 4 or 5 years ago, avoided Samui but went to Pang Ngang and Tao - Tao was amazing, although not many sandy beaches - it's mostly diving areas. Pang Ngang was alright but it was all about the Full Moon party which was dissapointing (I downed a mushroom shake and threw up early doors). I stayed on bottle beach though which is tucked away from the noise and it was fucking paradise.

I also went to Krabi which was fantastic for beaches and not as commercialised as other parts. I think Phi Phi is supposed to be one of the best islands but I didn't go.

I'm sure it's all changed a lot since I was there, but basicacally I loved the country. Planning on meeeting an old friend out there sometime next year.

I would go to Bangkok if I were you for the experioence of it, you'll love it or hate it. Contrary to what most people do I stayed the longest in bangkok, got to learn it a bit and ended up loving it. When I go back in june probably stay there for the most part and go to pha ngan for a holiday

Koh Pha Ngan was probably me favourite of the islands, can't go wrong. You go to one though and you've been to all of them unless your mad on diving or something. I thought Koh Tao was shit, a bit insular and was hard to find accommodatrion as I wasn't interested in diving

Krabi is nice, I stayed in Krabi town though not at the beaches

I can't wait to go back, so so cheap for beer it was just a 3 month bender

Shitloads of prick travellers who act like they're discovering new lands or something though. The amount of times I had to listen to 'oh its so commercial' and all that shit, fuck off and admit it you're here for cheap booze and hot weather

Lee - at least stay in Bangkok for one night, its an experience if anything Smiling

Koh Samui is good if you want nice (but busy) beaches and nice hotels and there are plenty of home comforts - KFC for example Eye-wink Also the nightlife is busier, lots of hot Aussie girls - well there were when I went Smiling

And as I told you before, if you want quiet beaches, you can't beat Koh Pha Ngan. This is where I stayed last year...

The hotel was http://www.sawadee.com/hotel/kohphangan/baanpanburi/pictures.html

Think the beach was called Haad Thong Nai Pan - and it was absolute paradise. I've heard Bottle Beach is also very good too.

Looks nice. I was at Bottle beach beach in '95 and it was incredible, only had electricity 8-9 hours a day, no phones etc most relaxinig place I've ever been, lovely locals, payed volleyball and swam in the day, or lounged in a hammock, then ate and got pleasantly drunk and stoned in the restaurant with a nice group of people. It might be a bit too chilled on your own though.
I worked on Koh Phi Phi for quite a while and loved it there, though it's probably changed massively since I was there.

On your own is the only way imo, doubt I'd have met half the people I did had I been with a mate.

I did drink more though being on my own as I found that I only really met people when I was on the piss.

Fucking loved Hippies Cool

I am right in thinking that was the place where EVERYONE ended up at the end of a night out?

Also Lee - if you go to Phi Phi, you never know - you may end up meeting a member of Girls Aloud... Eye-wink

Don't think any of them existed when I was there, although I guess it's just a name change. Got any pics of Hippies, or the other places? Would be interested to see if I recognise them.
