Houses cost a bomb - some older ones have charm and character.
Cars lose money fast.
and birds are a combination of the two above, either way with my average looks I'm hardly in a position to be fussy.

Excellent point. Although at the same time if you can get a big purchase on 0% with the option repay early it seems silly not to. (coming from someone with a low salary)

Oh I am not dissing paying on 0% finance one bit. If you can't afford it outright or need the extra disposable income then it's a no brainer.
But the suggestion that saying that getting a new watch (rather than a perfectly good £3-4k second hand mint Sub) makes them feel that they've earned it AND paying for it on finance is jokes.

good point that.
a decent watch is something ive wanted for a while and im not bothered about having someone else's hand me down. if it saves me £2k then why not?! im not in a position where £2k doesn't matter to me.
just wanted some non-salesperson advice on which models are the more desirable etc.

As everyone has said, if you are not precious about having something pre-owned (I'm not and as a result every watch I've had has been second hand) then buy a used one. You will get a much better deal. I'm not that up on prices these days as not in the market, but 3k should get you a nice pre-owned Submariner. Possibly the most iconic/timeless watch of all time and looks good with a suit or shorts and a t-shirt. Just buy that.

Tool watches are designed for a particular purpose first, dive watches being the obvious example.

You won't find me on a Yacht with my YM either
but some might argue that high build quality and superior craftsmanship IS a luxury these days.
