Hello there sandocan, think back to when you were dating, before you settled down and went steady. How did you approach men then? Try to recapture some of that energy and think how would you like to ask them out.
What type of store is it? We can probably think up some suitable ruse to get you talking to the guy and you can slip in a question or two about if he has a girlfriend (check for a wedding ring first) and try a slightly more direct approach and ask if he would like to to someplace local that is good for a first date - think comedy club, cinema, local event or somewhere that you will feel safe.
Tell him you think he looks nice and has a fun manner and you would like to get to know him a little better before asking him on a date - that way you keep some of the control as the first date is not really a date after all.
The main thing is to try to be relaxed and be yourself. If you want him to like you then it should be for what you really are, not some image you are trying to project to impress.
Go for it and try to make it fun - smile and it will help you feel happier and hopefully give you more confidence.
