Reading the original question:
How else are you going to get to know them unless you set up some sort of mini-date? Chat the guy up at work and get him sacked?
Best to set up a kind of pre-date setting where they can have a chat for a little while and if they like what they find then fine, but if not then they walk away with no hard feelings. Lay down the rules before starting and no-one gets hurt.
It makes sense to me.

I'll leave you you all to generalise and make fun of my dilemma…the only sensible comment I've had is about it being a long walk/drive to the next store if it all went tits up…gonna sleep on it and make a decision in the morning.
