didn't they change their price match policy to only match prices if they came with the same guarantee?

from their website:

"We set highly competitive prices for all our products, with a dedicated team regularly checking them against other high street competitors. If we find a national high street competitor offering a better nationwide price for the same product, sold with the same service conditions, we'll lower our price to match in all our shops and on our website, including when a competitor is having a sale."

Edit: http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/sale-of-goods/understanding-the-sale-of-goods-act/your-rights/

"Your rights are against the retailer – the company that sold you the product – not the manufacturer, and so you must make any claim against the retailer. "

"If you buy a product that turns out to be faulty, you can choose to reject it which means you can give it back and get your money back.

But, the law only gives you a reasonable time to do this – what's reasonable depends on the product and how obvious the fault is.

However, even with major purchases or complex items, it’s safest to work on the basis you usually have no more than three to four weeks from when you receive it to reject it."
Unless its under warranty/guarantee, in which case it is the manufacturers responsibility, idiot Eye-wink

Are you seriously telling me that if you bought a PC tomorrow, got it out of the box and it wouldn't work, you would take it back the next day and happily have them tell you "sorry mate, it's not our problem, you'll have to contact the manufacturer. Bye then" or wait x amount of time so they could send it off to get it repaired?

Don't some products like vacuum cleaners come with stickers on saying "Don't take me back to the shop, call 0845 …" ?

You keep referencing buying goods not buying goods under guarantee/warranty.
1 second, 30 minutes, next day it makes no difference (under 5 years). Of course I wouldn't be happy, why would anyone be happy with a faulty product? I'm just pointing out the law for most electrical products

the warranty is with the manufacturer not the retailer.

retailers provide a service i.e somewhere convenient for the manufacturer to have their goods and you can purchase the goods for a fee (share of the profit). as part of the service you can take back a product within a reasonable time frame depending on the product and ask for a refund, swap or a repair. the retailer will then liaise on your behalf with the manufacturer.

The plot thickens.

I always thought you had 6 months to return an item as faulty to the shop, anything out side of that it could be tricky going to the shop and so you go to the manufacturer.

Which is irrelevant for the sake of this argument because:

I was talking about a brand new item, straight out of the box. I was 100% entitled to a refund or replacement and not accept a repair. My contract is with the retailer. The retailer's contract is with the manufacturer/their supplier, who they would take the issue up with

not disagreeing with you robii as I've done the same thing.

I think that is part of the sale of goods act where an item should be in certain condition or new or when sold or if stated otherwise, used, open box, etc.

you expected a brand new item to be working it wasn't you're entitled to a refund or a swap.

bill I've taken back items on the last day of the year warranty and had the retailer sort it out.

What's the mark up on electrics?
Hardly anything is it?
Surely comet will just sell this all off at their trade prices to smaller stores? Rather than risk all the stock going "missing" from disgruntled staff.
