Best: First day working from home, don't have to fuck about in the office.
Worst: Hour in, whole company made redundant.
So, if anyone needs a newly freelance graphic designer…

So sorry to hear that dude.
Finished my last gig 3 weeks ago, with something lined up and a bunch of other things bubbling.. everything cancelled. Nothing on the horizon…

Iys fucked. So many Americans on some engineering Slacks I’m in lost their jobs. Just there and then.

This is actually mental. We're going to be fucked even harder when we come out the other side of this if a large portion of the population doesn't have a job / income.
I expect the gov will have to announce more help for businesses (so they can keep staff on skeleton wages or something) and individuals (freelancers, small biz directors, etc). Apparently the loan scheme they announced could take weeks/months, so in the short-term that will do fuck all to stop the hemorrhaging.
People who have been let go - did your companies say they'd take you back when this is all over?

Sorry to hear that Sub. It’s max.
My wife owns a kids lifestyle company. Started in the US but bigger office is in the UK. They employ 67 here and 28 in the US. Waiting for the the PM announcement but it looks like they have to reduce by 50%. It’s mental. No trade shows this year so very little orders. Most shops aren’t putting in future orders either because no one knows if they’re going to be allowed out.
It’s unlike any recession. It’s just a sudden drop in income. It’s instantaneous. Mental. Desperately trying to work out a direct to consumer strategy for them at the moment as most of their orders prior to this are through retailers.

Word for freelancers. Speak to the HMRC. If you need to cut outgoings the rate of interest for the HMRC is much lower than any bank etc

Cheers man, yeah it's just a panic and businesses a just locking down to protect themselves. Sure it'll pick up but don't expect much until this time next year… as things stand.

Gov's latest announcements might be of interest to some. Offering to pay staff wages up to £2,500 so companies don't let people go.
20 Mar 2020 18:38
And if you’ve just been laid off there is protection there as well!

your not technically a freelancer if you have a limited company, but this is one thing that would be interesting to clarify as otherwise the only support on offer is an interest free loan? if it is a option I would assume it would only cover what you can show you were paying yourself previously, from what I could understand about freelance all that was mentioned was being able to claim statuary sick pay? which is something like 90 quid a week

Really not sure how this will all work out.
Bit of a discontinuity between action and results for the public to accept, especially with job losses, forced curfews, schools shut, winners and losers from government schemes etc. If the death toll rises government will be criticized for incorrect action, if the death toll is minimized questions will be asked if the risk appetite was correct and was the threat really even there?
Stress hasn’t really started yet, only been a week I am unsure of the end plan? Vaccination? Assumed none repeat infection?

At least 270,000 cases, all airlines stopped and business shut - I can’t find one person on YouTube who has previously tested positive showing what the cough is actually like.
20 Mar 2020 22:15
Do you still have it? How long did it last? Was it non stop coughing or a couple of coughs an annoying amount of times?
Did you have a fever?

So days 1-5 I had an intermittent fever, mostly in the evenings / overnight - the killer thing was the exhaustion and the constant sinus heavy headache, I just wanted to stay in bed and sleep all day, my appetite was shot and even getting up to take a piss was like running a 10k. Paracetamol didn’t seem to do anything for the pain but reduced the fever. Day 6 on I started getting the dry cough but by then the exhaustion was gone and appetite was at around 50-60% so it was just annoying - for me it wasn’t constant just intermittent throughout the day, I kept drinking water and getting my lozenge on. The slightly unnerving thing was the accompanying breathlessness - like I was constantly winded and had to catch my breath even when talking for more than 10 seconds. I’m day 11 since it started today and the breathlessness is pretty much gone, no fever for almost a week and coughing is at a minimum. So for me, all in all it was pretty mild - just a really shitty flu with the coughing / breath stuff and the feeling I wanted to spend all day everyday in bed. But then I’m fortunate with no real underlying health stuff except asthma when I was a kid. CSB etc

Sounds shite - good info though thank you. That’s prob the best detail I’ve seen so far
