This forum seems to be quiet on the subject. Your silence makes you complicit to the white privilege racism. Do you any of you support BLM?

I do.

I thought we were having this debate in the Crowd Control thread?

Anyway, this has to be the time. We can’t fuck this up and go back the way it was.

How it happens is beyond me. I don’t see how legislation will work. It’s pretty much illegal in the UK to discriminate and use hate language but it doesn’t stop the racist cunts.

How does it end?
I just don’t think it will until it’s been eradicated through education. That will take another generation at least.
The millennials mostly seem good toward race so it’s a matter of the old bigots dying off.

You’ll never get rid totally, but the odd racist will be seen as the local weirdo in 20 years. Hopefully. I do really hope so.

That whole tribalistic: team a team b, With or against, ally or enemy is pretty sickening.

Also I don’t see the point much in talking politics with some slow fuckers from a pretty clothes e-gathering place. I care For your opinion in shoes, society not so much

Hmm? Maybe we should put white people in concentration camps until they think properly? I know you wouldn't have a problem with that because after all you are a sane and rational individual who's thought patterns are always correct.

What exactly is wrong with my comment in your opinion?

I didn't say I was correct. I don’t have the answers but I know this won’t be a quick fix. Racists don’t change overnight. This isn’t American History X.

And don’t think for one minute I have all these leftist views. Black people are racist too. So are Chinese, Japanese, Pakistani etc etc.

But the white race has been oppressing blacks for hundreds of years. Of course it’s improved, but with Trump and Johnson the rhetoric has crept back into power and it’s pretty dangerous.

I’m not saying get rid of right wing governments either, as May, Cameron or Bush wouldn’t have fucked this pandemic up so badly or spouted the racist bullshit we get nowadys? It’s not conservatives that are the problem. It’s these populist areaholes who are dividing is.

We need to mix a lot more. You still have black, brown and white areas. That’s quite shocking really. Why do colours still stick to predominantly one part of a city? We don’t have this utopian multi cultural society everyone talks about, in the UK anyway.

Until we truly mix in school, work and socially, we are stuck with this pseudo apartheid, because that’s what it is. We are all racist to some degree. I doubt we will ever get rid of that.

Instead of spouting your usual bullshit try something constructive for once Mil, let’s hear your thoughts on why you wish you were aboriginal. Free booze and housing is it? Fucking idiot.

Or maybe you’re not? Maybe we are all suppressing our racist tendencies and you’re just being honest.

would be interested to know whether people think things are genuinely going to change for the better because of what’s going on RN?

a noble cause indeed but it somehow feels like we’ve been here before over the last however many years and the higher level problems are so massive, systemic and ingrained in our society that they become highlighted in the media for a few weeks/months before fading away to be replaced with something else

Edit: on a lower level (in USA) we will hopefully see more cities adopting the 8cantwait policing principles following the current protests https://8cantwait.org/

Overnight? I seem to remember the racist in question did a few years in prison and ended up getting bummed by his Nazi buddies.

Which unfortunately might be the only way for some people.

I agree. But this does feel a little different than anything I’ve seen before.

What I’m saying is American History X is idealistic.

It happens but it’s not common. I’m pretty sure most come out of prison more radicalised in one way or another.

I’m all for a bit of bumming if it helps the cause.

Time is the only cure for racism or any prejudice. Attitudes change drastically with each generation.

The only reason it seems bad now is because the Internet and modern nationalist political movements have emboldened people to express the prejudices they've always harboured.

The cure is every white person recognising their privilege. So many think it doesn't apply to them or excuse it and ignore. Put yourself in the shoes of the black person and the socio-economics benefit the white person more.

I have nothing but love, respect and sympathy for black people affected by racism, i.e. all black people, but I also have a deep mistrust of identity politics and Black Lives Matter as an organisation is not without baggage unfortunately. This baggage is exemplified by the accusatory tone you have so far taken in the thread, Mr. X. Could you have started this thread in a more stupid way?

I give a lot of thought to racism, which I find sickening, but I would like to do more to counter it. This whole moment feels like a turning point, especially given the political climate, and I'd like to be more proactive. I'm an architect, which is unsurprisingly a very white profession, and I suspect that doing a talk in a school in a disadvantaged area could be worthwhile. There are programmes for doing such things. I imagine going into architecture doesn't really seem like an option to lots of kids and that's bad.

One thing I'm not going to do however is virtue signal and browbeat my white liberal friends on social media, or regurgitate memes and slogans. It's patronising and divisive and stupid. As always I feel like a lot of the very vocal people are more interested in feeling righteous than actually enacting change. Is vandalising a statue of Churchill (who I realise is considered a controversial figure by some blah blah blah) really likely to bring about progress? No, all it does is make half the country think these people are scum who specifically shouldn't be listened to. We can't afford to ostracise people who see things differently, that's how we get Brexit and Trump.

I've deliberately not wanted to get involved in discussions with people I know for this reason.

I listened to a podcast last week talking about company attitudes to the situation, one of which was from the VP Marketing for Mars. She said, as a business, you need to do things that you will genuine act on once the cameras are no longer on you. I think there is some truth in this from a civilian standpoint too for a lot of people.

Not browbeating your liberal white friends? Did you actually write that….?

Since this is a massively white privileged forum the least I could do is bring it to the whole community's attention. At least you've commented. The silence of others speaks volumes.
