What I can't understand is your stressing. Why is it a disgrace that the English teams have gone out? It's football for fucks sake. It should be more random than the same countries teams getting to the final, year after year.

It's not as if all of this CL football has benefited the English national side is it? All it's done is make the clubs richer with the TV deals, entrenching the status quo of the Premier League. So pardon me for not giving a fuck.

Because in the last decade we have done well in the comp but the tide is now turning. Only feels like yesterday we wouldn't bat an eyelid at English teams making the quarters, semi-final and final. Liverpool Chelsea met three seasons in a row (two semi-finals and a quarter final wasn't it?), had arsenal reach a final, man united three times and winning one of them and the most recent being Chelsea in 2012 (the season where they were the only English team to reach the quarter-finals). I was living in Berlin for a lot of that time and the premier league was the talk of the town amongst football fans. Even a sense of pride seeing an all English final. After that I found a lot more Germans taking interest in regular prem games I would watch down the pub.

Being a spurs fan chasing fourth every season don't you want to be competitive in it? It can't surely just be about getting there as it brings in a lot of money. If anything you should want prem teams to at least regularly make the quarters and semis to keep 4th place up for grabs. We've seen the bundesliga get a fourth spot for doing well in the comp after having 3 spots for years. So a league could in effect lose a spot if their teams keep under-performing. Interesting article about it all today.

Will the Premier League always get four Champions League places?

No. That coveted fourth place in the Premier League – occupied by Arsenal for three of the last four years – has been a privilege since the 2001/02 season.

For fairness, UEFA hand out Champions League places depending on how a particular country has performed in the last five years. At its height, the Premier League had a Champions League finalist in each season between 2005 and 2012, winning three. But events of the last two-and-a-half years have threatened to ruin all that hard work…

Thing is it's always going to be a bit cyclical, maybe British teams are underperforming in Europe at the moment but it's really not the end of the world.

From that article the only serious threat to our coefficient is Italy and Italian teams bar maybe Juventus are fucking shite atm.

5 teams through in Europa league vs. 1 in PL suggests this statement may not be wholly accurate.

Torino will get knocked out this round (just lost 2-0)
Inter might well also, as might Napoli.
One of Fiorentina and Roma will knock each other out.

Only champs league team is Juve who could easily go out to Dortmunt next week.

Yeah they're doing better than us, but marginally.

Has anyone else clocked the ITV presenter Pougatch or whatever, like miming after he's asked the pundits a question? Looks like it's beeen dubbed in another language.. Done it like 3 times now and I dunno how Baines and Reid aren't pissing themselves if it's some sort of nervous tic.

A premier league team has been in every Champions league quarter finals stage from 1997 onwards, except the seasons City have been defending champions(2012/2013 & 2014/2015).

I doubt any English team would beat Barcelona. You could forgive City but not Arsenal or Chelsea, they should've been going through.

Chelsea didn't deserve at all to go through, over the two games. Arsenal definitely a wasted opportunity

Our European football exploits akin to the UK economy but we are in danger of falling away. We must do better next year!

[English teams in Europe's Biggest Competition]

[UEFA Europa League]

Not just me talking about it. Eye-wink
