Back to wifi problems.. i have installed a new router (wrt160n). My dad's Macbook Pro still drops signal when i walk over a certain point in the house. My iPhone and my netbook dont do this. The signal also goes up and down every few seconds.

The firmware is fully updated. I tried changing the channels, 11 - meant to work and be a different frequency than wireless phones - doesnt work, it actually fucks it completely (on all computers/phones - netbook, iMac, iPhone and Macbook Pro) and i then have to connect via cable to sort out the channel. 1 & 6 are taken. I'm on 10.

I have NO idea what's wrong. i) why does this laptop lose connection over one point of the house (about 10 metres from the router) ii) and why does the signal drop/fluctuate?

Try changing the security protocol.

My Imac sucks when my network is set to WPA2, or WPA+WPA2. It's ok on WPA and awesome on WEP. Certain airport cards seem to be a bit touchy with certain routers.

how many other routers are in the area (eg how many SSIDs?) you want to use automatic channels anyway everything uses spread spectrum anyway.

now is the router set to "n" only? i doubt it becasue half that stuff wont use "n". set it to cover "n" and "g" using both 2.4 and 4.8GHz if possible.

you get natural nulls with wifi anyway, really more than 10m is unrealistic anyway.

the worst case is the macbook pro antenna is screwed.

use http://www.istumbler.net/ to find out the rssi of the wifi and compare that around the house on both the imac and macbook pro using both g/n type.

Wifinder for iphone but it costs $3 does this for the iphone

Cheers guys. This MBP can see 1 ssid, ours. iStumbler can see ours and two others.

Nope, router was set to 'mix' (b/g/n), currently trying out 'g' but will try g/n. Also turned off IPV6 as a few people said this could have an impact.

Strength according to iStumber varies from 26-40%, currently less than 2 metres from the router. At the mo it aint picking up any of the usual SSIDs.

edit: just read on the apple forums, a lot of the guys over there seem to think it's a hardware issue on the pro and there's no real work around other than switching wireless cards and in some cases hard drives.

if nothing is using "n" then turn it off as it is using up bandwidth, just run "g" on its own.

check the macbook against the imac next to each other for rssi if its massively low then you could have an antenna problem.

I just cant be fucked with the genius bar telling me it's my routers fault. I'd put money on them trying fob the issue off.

Just go in and refuse to let them fob you off? For what it's worth I've heard the customer service is often pretty good from the 'genius' people (such a cunty name though)

Is it possible to extract the hard drive from a laptop? Got loads of stuff on my old laptop and the charging mechanism is completely fucked.

Yep it is, shouldn't be too difficult. Have a look on google for tutorials on opening up whatever laptop it is you have.

On a completely unrelated/random note, if you have o2 broadband and your internet has been shit lately with it just seeming to stop working then coming back all the time, I just changed my DNS servers and it seems to be a (perhaps temporary) fix

Are Sony going to screw me over if I get my Vaio repaired?

I got my VGN-C2Z in early 2007. Since I installed the Windows 7 RC, I have had problems with the graphics - the card was no longer detected and the display reverted to VGA. I put up with this for a few months because I thought I had broken it, but I installed a game a few weeks ago which suddenly brought the display back to life and looking like it should, only for it to look shit again when I restarted.

I reinstalled Vista from scratch, and my display looked all shiny and new again, only to go back to looking like crap after installing all my updates. I repeated this a few times to be sure with the exact same effect. So it's quite obviously an issue with the graphics card, nothing else.

After some research, I found it to be a technical issue with the Nvidia graphics card, and Sony have agreed to repair all models affected:

Sony Website wrote: In July 2008, NVIDIA publicly acknowledged a failure associated with some of their graphics processors (GPU) due to a manufacturing defect in the graphics chip packaging. At that time Sony and NVIDIA jointly investigated whether VAIO models equipped with this GPU were impacted by this issue. This investigation revealed that the issue had not occurred in such VAIO models.
However, after closely monitoring the situation, Sony has now determined that a very small percentage of VAIO computers with the NVIDIA graphics chips may be affected.
These PCs may exhibit distorted video, random characters or a blank screen due to a failure of the NVIDIA graphics chip.

Resolution
As a part of our commitment to quality, for any customer who requires repair of their VAIO computer due to the NVIDIA graphics processor issue, Sony will cover the cost of repair (parts and labor) at no charge during the first four years following the date of purchase of the models in question (see list below).
In case your model is shown in the list below, we invite you to contact VAIO Support to arrange service for your VAIO.

Applicable Models
• VGN-FZ11x, VGN-FZ18x, VGN-FZ21x, VGN-FZ31x, VGN-FZ38x
• VGN-AR11x, VGN-AR21x, VGN-AR31x
• VGN-C1Zx, VGN-C2Zx
• VGC-LM1xx, VGC-LM2xx
• VGC-LT1xx, VGC-LT2xx

Now I have just got off the phone with a woman who gave me all the old lines:

Sony woman wrote: This repair offer only covers problems with the graphics card.

If there are any other hardware faults these will have to be repaired at your expense before we can continue.

If there are no faults to be found, or you do not wish to go ahead with the repair you will be charged £150 to cover collection and delivery costs.

She also mentioned that the repair may take a while because there are lots of other people who also have the same problem.

Are Sony going to fix this, or is it more likely that everyone else will be blamed and have to pay extra for replacement motherboards etc. so they can cover their costs?
