Agree, I used to use AVG but it got slow and clunky, Avast is much better.

My desktop PC randomly plays American country & western / rock music at me from internet explorer, which while amusing is somewhat disconcerting. I'm fairly certain it's a virus but whenever I try to run an anti malware / spyware scan it crashes the PC (blue screen of death). I've tried a full virus scan (took hours) but it didn't find anything. Any ideas? Formatting is not an option as I can't be bothered to back everything up etc. and it's a couple of years old anyway. I would rather just buy a new one if formatting is the only option.

Downlaod Malware bytes, run it, if it crashes your computer, restart your computer in safe mode and run Malware bytes, that should get rid of it.

Also I highly recommend using Firefox over IE. Might take you a day to get used to it but you will much prefer it, plus its faster and most likely safer than IE.

What Anti virus you running? I use AVG, its free and never had any problems with it, also like the protection it offers online.

Put some standalone virus scanners on a little usb key you don't really care about (as it might get full o' viruses) and scan the pc from it. Here's a list I nicked from someone:

0. Clamwin Portable http://www.clamwin.com (on computers that dont have clamwin installed)
1. Avira Standalone Antivirus Tool http://www.avira.com/en/support/antivir_removal_tool_for_windows.html
2. Norman Malware Remover http://www.norman.com/Virus/Virus_removal_tools/
3. Stinger http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
4. Portable AV http://www.data0.net/
5. Hijackthis from Trendmicro http://www.merijn.org
6. Multi Virus Cleaner http://www.viruskeeper.com
7. SmitFraudFix http://siri.geekstogo.com/
8. Rogue Fix http://www.internetinspiration.co.uk/roguefix.htm

Links might not work but you can always search for the things, think superantispyware might work standalone as well.

Can someone add that list, and a list of common free AV programs to the original post? Would help a lot of people out I reckon.

Could put together a proper list sometime I suppose, there are some really good free standalone tools about, I used a lot of them to get a fucking evil rootkit virus off my laptop recently.

Probably a stupid question but is a Intel Pentium Dual Core T4400 2.2GHz better than a Pentium 4 mobile 2GHz or not?

Nice list of stand alones. Would add Avast Antivirus to the original post also though. Best full antivirus I've ever used including all paid ones. Used Spybot SD for years aswell, great for Spy and Adware.

Avast Antivirus = www.avast.com
Spybot SD = www.safer-networking.org

Nod32 gets a lot of votes as best av but it costs money, I use avast on all my computers, it's very very good considering it's free.

McAfee and Norton are the twin devils. Although I seem to recall someone saying they've got a lot better in the last couple of releases.
