i was told before i bought my bike by someone, "theres no point buying a nice bike in london, it WILL get stolen".
starting to think this is true.
so im not really thinking of spending the 600-800 pounds i was thinking of spending when upgrading my bike.
infact i was thinking of even buying a stolen one off a yoot.
has anyone done this? and does anyone know of a place to do this apart from brick lane?

no point having a nice bike in london.. and then chaining up with a £30 lock outside dalston tesco's.. it will get teethed in no time.

i lock up with either an abus super magnum or 2 u lock fahgettaboudits and try and keep it in eyeshot and never lock up in ghetto areas.

don't fuel the cycle theft trade, besides.. you may end up getting nicked yourself or worse as has been done.. approached by the actual owner as there is quite a large network of spotters of stolen bikes in london.

yeah prob best to just be the honest man. but when the police dont even do anything despite you having clear cctv footage, it really does make you think.
couldnt have come at a worse time to be honest.

I want to build a decent (nothing amazing) racer to use now and again in addition to my mountain, for £200/300 could I do this or is that not enough cash? Will happily buy an old frame off ebay etc rather than having everything brand new. (I'm a bit jealous of my friends 80's campagnolo/colnago racer, it's a beauty).

if you stick with 80s/90s racers, should be more than enough for a pretty decent one.
you used to get more for your money. none of this plastic rubbish. some of the best bikes ive had were old cheap (around £80.00) secondhand racers. just try a few out, and make sure it fits. i wouldnt look for anything in particular.

Where on brick lane? I live really near there and have never seen anyone selling any decent knock off bikes.

Most of them are crappy £50 mountain bikes.

What was the bike by the way? I'll keep an eye out for some pikey selling odd shoes and a swish bike on Sundays when I'm cursing them for getting in my way.

Sainsburys have a hefty D-lock for 13 quid at the moment.

Regarding the bike, none of the components are particularly good, so overall it's just a pretty basic bike.

Might do if you're lucky, there are a few Saracen bikes on eBay at the moment around that price.
