Thanks for the recommendations everyone,
some good looking stuff there.
I don't have an unlimited supply of money though.Where to look if i'm after something a bit more budget friendly for basics/under-layers etc/socks etc.

Wiggle's own dhb brand is decent and functional if not particularly fashionable, as is
Sealskinz. I've got a few bits from Altura and Endura which are good.
Keep an eye of
SportPursuit for bargains. The Isobaa merino stuff is good at SportPursuit prices but I wouldn't pay full price for it. Icebreaker and Smartwool are better in my opinion.
Smartwool Phd socks are good.

as andy said, both excellent if you want branded gear. if you can wait a month for deliveries I would highly recommend spexcel on aliexpress. I also buy loads of these "giro" socks - very well made and cost a fraction of the real thing;

spexcel -
https://spexcel.aliexpress.com/store/2219030their sizing is a bit all over the place so I usually buy a couple of sizes and flog the leftovers. in general though the sizing is VERY small. I would take an XL in their gear, but an L in rapha pro team

Castelli and Sportful are owned by the same parent company and made in the same factory. Got a few bits of both and despite the price difference, I can't tell the difference in quality or materials.
Sportful No Rain gear is excellent, kept me warm and reasonably dry through several very cold wet rides where others were cursing their kit.

Any recommendations for mudguards for road bikes?
6 Sep 2018 12:03
Mudguards on road bikes are shit so depends on whether or not you want to be able to take them off when you don't need them.
Raceblade pro's are the only detatchable ones I've used (on my best bike) and they are ok but did need a massive amount of fiddling with to set them up in such a position they didn't rub (25mm tires but not much clearance on my frame). They do also move a bit during the ride but still would recommend.
For a more permanent solution, had SKS chromoplastics on my winter bike for a couple of years until I trashed them and they were really good but again a bit of a ballache to fit - needed a hacksaw to cut them to size before fitting…
Replaced them with Portland Design Works full metal fenders which were expensive but excellent quality and look decent so happy with them.

Also @Swede,
Those 'Giro' socks. Any truth to 'One size fits all'? Aren't you UK 11 like myself?
Also thanks everyone in this thread. Cobbled together some decent kit based on the recommendations here. Mostly rapha and sportful bits. Glad I asked because most stores are full of lairy overpriced shite..

Rapha selling on Wiggle now.
Lost its prestige (if it hadn't already)?

Definitely. The content and marketing strategy post investment has shown a marked change. The 'mystique' has been lost I think and it looks like they are trying to flog as much as possible. I know they used to sell via Sigma etc. early on, but I thought they pulled out of that to try and protect the brand. This seems like a step backwards.

i am a 9.5/10 and they fit good.. i am sure an 11 would be ok too. if you had tiny feet (no snaye) they would be massive though

Loving the retro jerseys on Prendas, anyone know what the quality is like?
Ordered some winter socks from there which are great.
