Potentially looking to buy an engagement ring this year. Looking on line theres a million and one places to buy but I cant help feeling like theres stupidly huge mark ups on everything.

What are the best options, buy the diamond separately or just go with one of the big companies (Blue nile, 77 etc)

Does anyone have any recommendations of where to get one made? Things to look for etc. Obviously looking for the best stone possible, hopefully at least a carat etc etc

Avoid De Beers, Graff etc.. Hatton Garden in London will give you a good selection of stones in various budgets..As you say mark up on diamonds is obscene

Definitely need to take a trip to Hatton Garden.

Seems like something I was going to spend £4.5 on a couple of years back is now pushing £6k!

Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham is definitely worth a visit. They just show you stones that are within your budget and then take it from there. It's best to have an idea of the design you want and how much you're looking to pay

77 diamonds also is worth a shot. uk based, can see it in person, less likely to get fleeced than in hatton garden.

Find what you want then spend 350 quid on a flight to dubai and buy it there for about half the price

Worst advice ever - just go Hatton Garden, any jeweller worth their salt will advise you correctly. Plus you want the after service as well.

Not really, simply not paying duties and taxes just for the start.

Jacko - if it was an option, I could put you in touch with a friend that does it for a living in Dubai. If you're buying at home - Blue Nile as MoB said.

I never once mentioned you would get ripped off in Dubai. I just think it’s poor advice to tell a first time buyer to go all the way to Dubai to buy a ring that will cost a lot of money.
In terms of Hatton garden, I said any jeweller worth their salt, not some stall in an arcade.
If ithe diamond is GIA certified and you go to a proper establishment - then it’s better than going to Dubai. Let’s say the setting becomes loose on the ring, you gonna travel all the way to Dubai? Plus you want the experience to be smooth, do you really want the stress of a round trip to Dubai. Would you buy a car from Dubai or a watch knowing you cannot go and see the person face to face in terms of after service.

Again, just my 50p worth

I bought in Hatton garden, wanted a specific colored diamond, they found a selection world wide, which was limited. Then I chose it, got it imported and they designed the settings and side diamonds etc.

No chance I could do that on my own.

The service and aftercare is worth the extra cash. It was in one of the larger boutiques.

If anyone is looking to buy in the next couple of months then my friends shop in Brighton is having a closing down sale now and everything is 50% off.

I bought my wife's engagement ring there last year.
Legit family business, they have been doing it 30 years or so I've known them since I was about 5.
