Ableton is as easy/difficult as you want it to be, if it's simple same genre mixing you wanna do you'll be up and away after an hour or so of tutorials/practice.
NEVER pay for software though!

you should pay for your host program, especially if you're on a mac.
ableton and logic are cheap enough plus you know its supposed to work and you won't have to deal with dodgy updates.
nope.
you need a soundcard with 2 outputs or a stereo out so you can split one mono to a stereo and use the other mono as your cue.
you can plug your mixer into your mac, but it won't play out in your speakers and sub…you'll only be able to record the audio.
i assume you have a mac desktop of some sort - which has a stereo out and line in - that line in will record in, but it won't play through.

Whats the risk with a mac mate? I don't know anything about this but as I'm unsure whether I'll get into it properly, I wouldn't mind getting a shady copy.

Is Ableton easy to use for a beginner? Just want to learn basics, nothing fancy.
Worth the investment?

I am unable to cue up the next song using vurtual dj on my macbook because i have no mono outputs for my soundcard to plug into.
Is there any way around this: ie
Is there something that enables me to use my macbook but use a dj sotware that also allows me to cue a song???
need help

there isn't a risk really, even less than there is on a pc (with all the vst cracks available).
just that when you have a legit copy of a host app like ableton or logic, you can be sure that it should be stable, you get all the updates and support with no drama (you can even attend the logic workshops at a mac store).. granted you can add cracked instruments/effects as much as you like but you know the host app is built to be stable.. not worrying about your dodgy copy of ableton when you try to export to aiff and it crashes repeatedly.
but to learn the basics and what not, there's no reason not to get a shady copy.. but when you get a bit more serious it makes sense to purchase.
