right i need some digital music advice, i've finally decided to buy serato but don't know what the fuck i should be downloading!
my current setup is 2x vestax pdx 2000 and a pmc7 pro mixer + ibook.
I'm not about to bun my vinyl collection so i will be mixing it up vinyl + mp3 and i intend on converting allot of my vinyl! but i don't know what i should be downloading 180 or 320 mp3 or wav i presume wav is better but is this going to sound miles better than the vinyl and converted files? ie making them sound shit? I'm leaning towards 320 mp3 but i still don't have a clue really.
also where is the best place to buy (or steel) techno beat port as allot of stuff i want but it's expensive almost the price of a record! and is it ok to use itunes (what's the quality like?) although they don't have much in the way of tehcno the stuff they do have is cheeper than beatport juno etc

If there are underground techno tracks that you like then I recommend paying for them to be honest. Admit though that beatport are their own worst enemy, charging 1 euro "wav handling fee".

russ - you will notice the difference between wav and mp3 if you are playing out, but at home probably not. mp3 over 192 should be fine.
anyone got traktor pro yet?

yeah i may well be playing out, but it's more how it will sound next to my vinyl or converted files? i don't know how the quality would match up?
@ larry i have no problem paying for tehcno i have over 2000 records downstairs to prove that! but paying over fiver for a mp3 ep ? ok for a slab of vinyl but a digital file seems like madness to me, my mate told me he made about 60p (maybe 90p i can't remember) from every 12" he sells (around 5 or 6 quid) thats on his own lables so how can somebody charge that much without any of the production ie: cutting costs ?

if you convert your own vinyl to a wav, it will sound much the same as one you get from beatport. probably a bit worse as on beatport they will be done straight from the master. if you are mixing vinyl with digital files nobody will notice the difference unless they are a sound engineer or something.

oh cool i thought the vinyl would sound abit crap! i think serato converts them to aiff files are these much the same? and what format/quality is itunes?

vinyl is supposed to sound better, but who really knows. aiff files would be fine, if thats what serato uses as long as you do them at decent quality. itunes store uses mp4 files i think but can play other formats. not too sure on these as i have only used wav and mp3

bit late here:
yes in my opinion vinyl sounds better but it sounds dirty in comparison, to quote john peel talking about vinyl "but i like surface noise, life as surface noise"

Try traxsource aswell, and if you are just paying for the MP3 it is just a matter of putting it on a CD-R etc
