You say "record"? Are you sure thats not an input to the mixer hence the static. You should be connecting to the "line out" or "monitor".
If something on a mixer is marked record I'd say that is a phono input for a record player.

right.

im using virtual dj off my macbook.
i want to cue / preview each track using headphones
problem is the headphone output is used for the speakers
a sound card is not visible as you need mono outputs for that

can i use this?

…so you think using that will allow you to play two different things at once with each going into a seperate line out?

no idea i'm afraid, a shit solution would be:

get one of those split thingies, plug your headphones and speakers into it.

pan your tunes to one side eg left for now, and only play the left side with your speakers

pan your preview to the right side so you can listen to the preview and the current song in your stereo headphones

You can get a jack like the one above that is a stereo splitter. That way you can monitor on say the left channel and then send something else to the right channel. It will all be in mono though. If you just looking for an extra headphone socket then the above should work.

say you have something like this:

then it would be firewire from soundcard to computer

line out 1 to speakers (via amp or whatever)

headphones out to headphones
