you need to get to know everyone in that particular scene. go to a lot of clubs and make friends with the people running the nights. they will either ask you, someone else will ask you to fill in at their night or you can put on your own night with mates and get some of these other DJs to guest. it does take a lot of time and effort as you are basically building a new social circle.

i guess you could give out CDs to bar/club managers or promoters, but you are just another anonymous face. i've never done this, cos i know it wouldnt get me anywhere. it really is about who you know.

unless you are playing on a massive system, its pretty easy. you'll have monitors and whatnot most places.

Guffer is totally spot on. Without wishing to name drop I worked in this industry for years and success is based on two things. Having a style that's totally different and makes people sit up. But that's nothing without connections. Find out who the key promoters are where you live and make it your life's mission to become their best friends. I have seen moderately talenedted DJs who are brilliant kiss-asses make fortunes and conversely really talented people who are bad at putting themselves forward go nowhere.

Once you have 1-2 years under your belt get an agent. I know people who cannot string two words together who can make £500-£2000 a week but you have to keep pluggin away.

The real money these days is in becoming a producer and developing a style that people want to get a slice of…

Good Luck

on a (very) low level, facebook is pretty helpful for this. there will be lots of little events around town you might not hear about otherwise or see posters for. a lot of the student nights have open decks for the first set now and then. the club will be empty, but its a good way to meet promoters, and practise on a big(ger) system.

i need to get back into playing out :o

Honest truth is I read fuk form time to time and it is v.funny. I'm mainly on at the moment as I have a big job interview coming up with a fashion agency and the people on this site are seriously into their threads. I'm well up on my brands but some of the niche stuff that comes up here is amazing.

Hopefully I'm going to sound quite knowledable!

On a seperate subject of mix tapes. Can I say that before I worked in fashion I did 3 years at a superclub and never once met a promoter who couldn't have built a life stize Emirates Stadium using only mix-tapes he had never listened too. Best way forward is to get a booking agent on side.

how does an agent get you slots at good clubs if youve got no material to to show to other promoters. Surely people cant just take his word for it. My aim is to be doing some kind of slot in ibiza in 3 years time. I dont care what room, its my favourite club in the world

makemlad, upload a mix onto here, would like to hear one.

Maybe I made sound the 'getting an agent' bit too easy. It is a bit Catch 22 but once you have an agent you get judged by who else they have on their books and you tend to be known and not have to justify yourself by that stage. The most succesful people I have ever seen do it by one of two routes:

Close association with a scene or a promoter who puts you forward. Work for this guy for free if he's going places.

Or do your own parties and create your own following. That's the best way and will only work if you have talent.

I have NEVER seen anyone arrive on the scene because of a mix tape…waste of time.

mixmag bedroom bedlam, but they get national level press so its way beyond giving a cd to a promoter.
