Happens to me all the time. More often than not it's dragged out over 3 months after already attending assessment centres and doing practical exams etc progressing through the stages. I miss the days of handing in a CV and if they like the look of it they would offer you an interview to prove your skills

I agree with this. It makes sense what you're saying here:
But if you feel that job security is still questionable, then it will help as it'll show that you're dedicated to the company and willing to do what you can for the business' requirements. Also, they should see it that you're doing them a favour anyway which can hardly count against you.
went to an assessment centre/day for jaguar land rover about five weeks ago. had positive feedback and was told by the recruitment bod who arranged it that i was the only one out of four or five candidates that she'd sent that wasn't rejected within a week. she said that jaguar had asked her to send over more candidates like me etc, and she was pretty positive about my chances and stuff.
just had a call telling me i was unsuccessful and i didn't get any feedback as to why etc. well pissed off. tried not to get my hopes up, but it was a good role and obviously jaguar are doing really well at the moment. if they'd have rejected me within a week like everyone else it would've been okay, but to leave it five weeks?!
takes the fucking piss!
