That's a cultural thing though surely? People in Asia have worn masks when ill for a long time so it not perceived as abnormal behaviour and you would not be judged/ostracised in the way I think you would be here.

With the shortage of masks, the only folks who should be wearing them out in public are the ones who feel ill (better yet, they should stay fucking home). the majority of people wearing masks in the west have surgical masks which are great for preventing the wearer's droplets from spreading to other folks, but don't protect the wearer from virus particles. and the ones that actually have n95 masks likely didn't go through the fit testing process to ensure there's a tight seal, thus rendering them as ineffective as a surgical mask at protecting against airborne virus particles.
