I think it's a bit of a case of "boy who cried wolf" - media has overhyped SARS, bird flu, foot n mouth, swine flu etc in the past to the point that as a population we are instinctively a bit tuned out and treating this as the next media hype.
It's also a bit of funny situation because if, thanks to the hard work of scientists, doctors, officials etc the spread of the virus is contained without infecting a massive amount of the population, then all the current naysayers will state "told you so" and feel vindicated - because of the people who do see it as a concern and have acted on it. Now officially labeled a pandemic by the WHO.
Yep but there's one thing different about this one, the world's governments are willing to destroy their own economies to mitigate this. It ain't hype. They obviously have intel they're suppressing to stop mass panic that this could be really bad, as bad as spanish flu but in the air travel age.
The only thing I hold out hope for is the actual amount of infected is much greater and mostly undetected, therefore making the mortality rate much lower than it seems now. This is Trump's theory/hunch.

That wasn't mass hysteria or media hype. Myself and a lot of other people here lived with the worst air quality on earth for a month.
I meant that a lot of the hype was that they were caused by ‘climate change’, but really it was a lot of arson and mainly a result of green policies that they were happening at all.. not to mention bushfires take place every year without the media coverage in the past… please correct me if I’m wrong.

Australian bushfires,

i guess it’s partly because of the Trump thing today but this country is very insular with very few foreigners, and even though this is a historic/ tourist city, hospitality is not really a big deal. My folks are visiting so I went to a small place very close to the hotel to check it, and was just told they were not gonna serve us. fuck em
this whole thing is getting old now, really disruptive for me anyway

the amount of times I was refused service in Japan..more than you think. Get over it. Racism happens to everyone everyday.
Yep Fudge the media hype has been about climate change. Funny how the Victorian fires 10 years back killed 10 times more people and raised the same number of properties but everyones forgotten that and these last fires are now the "worst ever". They affected the most people with smoke and road closures in history but that was because of the geography of the fires and the massive fuel buildup caused by Green policies of banning land clearing for years. Some say on purpose so they can blame climate change and human emissions. Hippy faggots. I hate them so much, never trust a hippy, ever.

Just a bit on context…
‘…In 1997 we were told that bird flu could kill millions worldwide. Thankfully, it did not.
In 1999 European Union scientists warned that BSE “could kill 500,000 people”. In total, 177 Britons died of vCJD.
The first Sars outbreak of 2003 was reported by as having “a 25% chance of killings tens of millions” and being “worse than Aids”. In 2006, another bout of bird flu was declared “the first pandemic of the 21st century”, the scares in 2003, 2004 and 2005 having failed to meet their body counts.
Then, in 2009, pigs replaced birds. The BBC announced that swine flu “could really explode”. The chief medical officer, Liam Donaldson, declared that “65,000 could die”. He spent £560m on a Tamiflu and Relenza stockpile, which soon deteriorated. The Council of Europe’s health committee chairman described the hyping of the 2009 pandemic as “one of the great medical scandals of the century”. These scenarios could have all come to pass of course – but they represent the direr end of the scale of predictions.
Should public life really be conducted on a worst-case basis?…’

The flu kills many more people than this every year!
We’ve been studying influenza for years and years so it’s a significantly larger data set than the coronavirus meaning that the mortality rates and infection rates for coronavirus shouldn’t be compared yet. Not to mention the huge spike in coronavirus testing vs the flu (most cases go unreported)
Look, take precautions, wash your hands if you don’t already you dirty fuckers and live your life.
