I don't think anyone is arguing that a new strain has come about. More the fact the government knew about this back in September and now using the narrative of "new variant" in order to lock down the country further as they know the majority of the general public don't listen to them anymore.
It has backfired already with other EU countries banning all travel by Brits so quickly.
