You wouldn't think doing weights required enough energy to make your body resort to burning fat.

why not?
you are helping to maintain muscle, and you are using a huge number of calories, and you are raising your metabolism for the rest of the day.

cardio is for fat girls who want to stay fat.

agreed, doing weights does help to maintain muscle. If you want to loose weight (body fat) though, cardio is the best method. Its simple adjust diet and excersise accordingly so you are in a calorie deficit = weight loss

Weights 3-4 times a week (lift heavy!)

Cardio 3-4 times a week (HIIT is best, in my opinion)

Diet high in protein, moderate/low carbs, low fat (most of which should be EFAs)

5-6 small meals a day to keep the metabolism high.

No carbs after around 6pm.

That's my approach for a lean, muscular look. (And no, I don't currently have the look myself- but I'm well on the way!)

That is true…

but I've done both (cardio and weight training) to lose weight, and the cardio drops the most.

Yes building muscle does help you to burn more calories, but you have to pack on approx 10lbs of muscle to burn approx 130 calories per hour…and while you can put on that amount of muscle easyish in the beginning, it can take a while to put on any extra muscle.

Weight training itself does not use that much energy when compared to cardio, so for weight loss I'd go for the cardio.

"If you want to loose weight (body fat) though, cardio is the best method."

why? lighting weights is one the most energy expensive things you can do, and keeps your metabolism raised for hours afterwards.

i have lost inches but put on weight in muscle, i spend most of my time in the gym doing weights, i tried to loose my body fat first and now i can see my muscle… my arms have never looked like this before, like when i stretch out i can see the muscles in my arms which i love… not too fussed about my tummy, its flat and thats good enough, no bulge Smiling

On average (for a 200lb man) weights will use approx 250 calories per half hour.

Runnning at 5mph would use approx 380 for the same lenght of time.

Sorry but you're wrong there.

using light weights would use approx 150 calories paer half hour. What I stated above was for heavylifting eg power lifting etc

Think about it…

when lifting weights you're trying to isolate a muscle/muscle group. This means that the only muscle burning extra calories is the one being used.

However, when doing cardio you're using numerous muscles at a increased rate.

but the thing is, its not simply about creating the largest deficit possible.
thats really easy to do just by not eating.

wouldnt it be better to get the diet right, and then do some weights to maintain muscle.

i assume the difference is that lifting weights involves resting between sets and exercises.

the actual time spent lifting is extremely intensive

You're taking what I say to the extreme. You have to be sensible by eating the calories your body needs to function, as well as maintain the muscle you're trying to put on.

As I said before, packing on the muscle would burn more calories, but you'd have to wait a while to put that amount of muscle on.

If you've been restricting your diet, your body has probably gone into starvation mode and is holding onto every last piece of fat it can.

Up your metabolism.

i didnt say that you advised starving.

but still, wouldnt it be better to get the diet right, and then do some weights to maintain muscle.
weightlifting maintains muscle and raises the metabolism significantly for hourse afterwards…..not so with cardio.
