but i feel like such a puff on the bench press, is there anyway of building up strength on that muscle group without looking like a dick lifting tiny weights.
or is it just best to struggle through and work my way up?

trust me mate nobody there gives a fuk about what you're lifting. it's your own vanity that's making you feel self conscious. Just lift the right amount of weight for you and concentrate on your form. You'll soon find you're lifting more.

That is very low for an adult man Laughing out loud Still you have to start somewhere. If you can get a mate to spot you then you could try doing 3 or 4 reps of 10Kg a side for example. Good way to increase your strength quickly.

A few of my friends have used personal trainers and they always start you off using the machine equivalent first - e.g chest press machine for a few weeks with a steady weight increase, before moving to the real deal.

You could try that if your feeling self conscious as people cant tell what weights your using, then drop the peg to the bottom when you finish Eye-wink

As Guido says no one cares what weight or reps your doing anyway, you might see someone doing reps with just the bar because they have just finished 5 heavy sets or something and there will always be someone stronger than you at the gym! Just try and keep your form strict and dont pile the weight on too fast, you will pick up bad habbits that are hard to shake off. Low weight increasing steadily and strict controlled reps to begin with.

Agree with those two. Just get on with it and do low weights.

People who know will have more respect for skinny people doing the right exercises at low weight, than they will skinny people using some wank machine or something.

Best way to progress, do the exercise you want to get better at.

train consistently and try to eat well. as crackajack said don't eat junk, because it's difficult to get rid of after.

indeed - it sucks. go back to the drawing board.

where are the noodles, the pasta, the veg curries, the veg sir fry's, the soups, the lentil stews, the risottos, stuffed mush/aubergine/peppers etc.

what you have done is written a completely unsustainable (and taste free) diet.

These diets are crazy, I lost 4 stone last year 6-7 months, just reduced my calories by about 500 and a bit of exercise, I think chicken and snack-a-jacks were my saviours.

Thought the same thing. But it could just be a mental barrier or getting used to form as a newbie. His numbers will boost once he's confident under the bar, which should be pretty soon…I'd hope
