Food in particular could be dirt cheap if you ate in local restaurants/ramen/izakaya/yakitori bars and not hotels

It is cheap to eat there, even 7/11 and Dollar store have enough variety of cheap bento boxes to keep you interested.

To the OP - if you are going to Hiroshima, check out the Parco, it's like a department store but has some decent brands in there. I can't remember doing much other shopping there, there are loads of vintage shops a la harajuku (Spins is probably the best)but I don't recall seeing any other shops for menswear labels. I recall a flathead store but maybe that was in Tokyo, would make more sense.

Same goes for Osaka and Kyoto, not much clothes shopping to be done there in my experience. I did go to an incredible onsen in kyoto though. One of the baths was electrified Eek

If you can squeeze it in, a trip to Hida Takayama (HEE-da Ta-KAR-yama) is well worth it, managed to fit a couple of nights in between tokyo and Kyoto.

If you don't have time to get down to Kyoto. Kamakura is an excellent day trip from Tokyo. Lots of shrines, temples, giant buddha etc.

Thread bump.

We're hoping to go over to Tokyo in July and needs some pointers. Just started looking but thinking Shinjuku may be a good place to stay, this hotel in particualr cos its affordable.

Probably be there for 8-10 days. Ideally would like to do some shopping, eating, drinking, lots of mind blowing stuff preferably. Want to go up Mount Fuji if possible, do some touristy stuff, any zoos, theme parks or other decent attractions, see lots of bright lights and stuff.

Been watching videos on Youtube and that Alcatraz restaurant and the one with the robots look mental.

Hoping that some of my fuk friends can share their experiences and drop knowledge.

who cares about that bullshit? does Kamakura have a shop with cool stuff? If not who cares?

going back for a couple of weeks this coming june. has anyone had experience renting an apartment short-term? any recommendations?
i've only had a look at airbnb so far, which seems ok

how did you get on renting an apartment? i'm looking at airbnb and thinking of using it. never used the site before but my friends have used it around europe. seems good and legit. i'm planning on going back next year and planning ahead checking out flights etc.

Heading myself next March, any update on the airbnb experience?

Also apart from the madness of Tokyo what else is there to see/do of note in the country?
Have heard of people heading to Osaka etc but not sure what is there that's worth seeing

Will most likely be a 10 day trip

Only ever been to Tokyo but next time I will be going to Kyoto for sure and Nagano (my sister in law is from there so have an interest in visiting)

if you go to Tokyo and only have 10 days you can avoid Osaka. I would recommend Kyoto anytime.

Osaka is a great base to see Nara or Koya San.
For a 10 day trip, I would go for Tokyo and day trips to Nikko, Kamakura, Chiyoda/Fuji-Q Highland.
I think that Kyoto itself needs 3~4 days.
