Ok so school me on Kyoto then, a quick google tells me the trains are the way to go…..that the fast bullet type lads?

Seems to be more along the lines of traditional Japanese gear yeah? All temples & shrines etc

The whole Jap trip is primarily about shopping & sightseeing/photography so i guess it looks like Kyoto is moreso based around the latter

One week is enough for Tokyo to do everything (sights and shopping) in my opinion. As you're on a 10 day trip, I'd say limit yourself to 5 days at most, in Tokyo and spend the rest either doing day trips or over night stays in Osaka and/or Kyoto.

Kyoto is indeed about landscape and shrines => http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2158.html
Shopping wise, there is a F.I.L. and an Isentan, that's about it, Osaka is much better.

Headed to Japan in about a month…will gladly take recommends on neighborhoods in tokyo to stay, etc… want something chill, but also easy and close to some general action…shopping and sights. I know that's vague….

The chain tokyu stay was excellent value for money when I went. Gotanda was a great stop for price and transport links.
