I did just over two weeks. Here was roughly what I did roughly…

Tokyo (2 nights) - including a day trip to Nikko
Hakone (1 night)
Matsumoto (1 night)
Kanazawa (2 nights)
Kyoto (2 nights)
Hiroshima and Miyajima (1 night)
Kyoto (2 nights)
Tokyo (3 nights)

Used this as a guide and modified slightly.

I have a standard email for more info that I wrote up for a few friends going after, focusing on Tokyo / Hakone / Kyoto. Let me know if you want it.

I camped out of season for a couple of nights on Miyajima. It was super creepy.

Check if there’s a sumo basho on while you’re there.

Kagoshima & Osaka aquariums are both great.

Go to as many onsen as possible. My favourite was on Yakushima.

Smoking weed in public places (smoking zones tho) is fine - theoretically most police just don’t know what it smells like.

The hiking trails in Koya San are really cool, so is Hida Takayama.

Ps if you’ve got the option, postpone the trip until Hanami season.

No it is not. Get caught and you're looking at 21 days in prison with limited contact to outside sources, followed by a sentence or deportation. Been here 5 years, heard some horror stories and you don't risk it, especially when the cops randomly stop non Japanese for no reason. Delusional advice.

Fashion aside, what is your favourite thing(s) about Japan?

I'm there for 2 weeks in Spring. Going to be doing a lot of record digging and cuisine sampling, other than that I was just going to see what I stumble across. Like the idea of venturing rural.

Not really one for the touristy box-ticking vibes.

we went beginning of summer and did a trip out to Kamakura beach. The bamboo temple there is great and it was weird to see a different side of japan apart from crazy tokyo.

Spring is a great time to go. If you can time it right, you can start south and follow the hanami north as it blossoms. Rural onsen are almost always amazing.. there’s a really nice one on Sakurajima. Try and get get to the south islands for a real trip. I only made it as far as Yakushima but was snorkelling there and then hiking in the snow in Hida two weeks later.

If you really want to try something different, go looking for an electric onsen.

Just found a few pictures in a random folder. Nothing special but relevant to the thread.

Mountain path in Koya San

Deserted beach on miyajima. Camped here for a couple of nights

Snorkelling spot. Mad marine life out there.

Got any smudges of you convincing the Old Bill that '..this isn't a joint, officer it's a Chupa-Chup.'?
