Am just starting out and in the process of piecing together my first set. Tried a few sets, but other than going by price I don't really have a clue, are Cobra any good?

just grab a few different sets at your local club and try them and get th advice of a pro in the shop, basically buy whatever suits you rather than going by price, make etc. I bought a full set of pings years back and my mate alway beat me with his cheapo clubs.

Yeah I did that, and it seemed like he was trying to upsell rather than help. Tried some TaylorMade, Wilson and Cobras, but tried to push the TM on me which cost 40% more than the others. I liked the Cobras and the TM but wanted a second opinion as I hadn't heard of the brand before.

well i suppose some are going to try and push the higher value, shame as a decent bloke would sort you the best out regardless of price. You're unlikely to upgrade if they sell you top notch clubs 1st time around. Did the TM feel that much better? Cobras are pretty decent, if you can play with them then you're better sticking to something like that and tailoring your set as you improve your game. i made that mistake with my driver, buying the biggest and most expensive at the time and struggled with it for a couple of years trying to make it work. It did occasionally but more often didn't.

That's pretty much what I told him. That I wanted a decent (starter) set that I can learn the game with but not to go too expensive as I can always upgrade in a couple of years. His pushiness totally put me off buying from the club shop. The TMs were pretty much on a par with the Cobras, at least in terms of how cleanly I hit them - the TM hybrids were slightly better, but the Cobra irons felt a bit better. Both were discounted, the TM RBZs were around $800 but the Cobras (Amps) $500.

If Cobra has a decent rep then I will mostly likely go for them.

Cobra are good yeah, at your level you are unlikely to notice too much of a difference between brands at the minute. Stick to a budget and save your money to spend on lessons instead.

Ended up snagging a brand new set of Cobra AMPs on the bay this weekend for $263 (before shipping and taxes). Well chuffed as they are lovely clubs. They'd have been free if Mahan hadn't have bottled it yesterday, had a tenner on him at 44/1 Evil

I had money on Mickleson, my brother had money on Rose. Fair to say it was a tense atmosphere in our house last night. Glad to see Rose win though, very deserved after what he's been through and for not getting the plaudits he should've got for his Ryder Cup performance.

This.

Got tickets for The Open next month. Going up for a few days playing a round close by and off out in Edinburgh for a night. Should be a good do.
