I got a message from Kestin Hare giving me the option to opt out of their Comms. I thought the whole point was that you're only allowed to opt in. Otherwise if you miss that email, then your still subscribed, not necessarily having provided your consent, which seems to defeat the object.

Different interpretations of ‘legitimate interest’ are being used.
Some businesses are taking the view that if you signed up to emails directly on their site there is no need to ask you to opt in again. - which does sound fair enough to me

Some cunts rung me asking why I hadn’t replied to their email.

There is an implied opt-in for electronic marketing based on a preexisting relationship, e.g. you bought something. Still need to offer an opt-out though.
If you just enquired about an item, bought your email etc they can't rely on this and needed your consent.
Email to ask for consent when they don't have it but need it isn't lawful.

As long as they can prove where they collected your email from and that you manually opted in / provided consent (i.e. not a pre-ticked box at checkout) they're probably fine with the opt-out / update preferences approach. It's kind of sneaky, but I believe operating within the regulations.
Plus I think brands would probably stand to lose 70%+ of their subscribers simply because people missed their GDPR email - this is probably why brands are sending out like 20 emails to people who haven't opened or confirmed yet, because they're trying to salvage as much as possible.

Loving weeding out all the hotels I stayed with once or some loyalty scheme which I never used. It’s doing the unsubscribing work for me

Companies have been advised by the lead-gen industry that they need consent, they won't get it because people are sick of it, and they will continue to email you anyway.
Handy to get emails from all sorts of things at once to 'unsubscribe' though

2018 and there's still ecomm stores that don't have basic filtering like by sub-category or colour. You're having a fuckin' laugh if you think I'm scrolling through all your shite. Instant tab-close.

Constant burning smell in Manchester, Any sort of smoke or burning smell does my nut in, even more so when it's 30 degs.
Also, this hot weather brings out all the ignorant ground floor smokers lighting up on their balconies to the delight of everyone living above; the decibel retarded idiots who watch their TV's late at night with their balcony doors open and basically any bloke who goes shirtless in the city centre needs a word.
