Easiest way is probably through your phone - download the coinbase app. This allows you to buy BTC, ETH and LTC with a credit card. It provides a wallet for each currency too. Really simple.

i purchased some ethereum around a month and a half ago on cex.io. should i be moving it into a different wallet to hold onto? or is it safe in cex.io?

Never keep any significant amount in an exchange account.

They are far more likely to get hacked (or go bust) than a personal wallet

Then use an exchange like Kraken or Bittrex to purchase other digital currencies with the BTC.

You will need to setup a Bitcoin wallet on your PC as exchanges don't allow transferring between one and another.

Thanks Byte, again looking into this, just trying to get my head round how it all works and how you can convert it into fiat currency.
