you are buying/betting that Neymar will return x amount of divs over a 3 year period from when you purchase the stock.

Yes, their value within the index which is based on their ability to return dividends or their future potential to return divs over a 3 year period from when you purchased. You could call it a 3 year 'bet'.

For example…

I bought Harry Kane stocks that cost 688p each

In the past week he has returned 19p in media dividends (plenty of column inches, a very good week)

So if he continues to return the same amount of divs for the next 3 years, I will earn 2964p per share in divs.

This is a great return, so his share price has increased this week to 730p.
So I could settle my 'bet' now and sell for 730p, i would have made 42p in cap app and 19p in divs.

So this week I've seen a 8.8% return on my investment in Kane.
