Goto COS should be around 200-250 and then take it to a tailor. The quality isnt amazing and people will argue about M&S and other places having better materials/construction but youll get a better fitted/looking suit off the rack in COS then just have it tweaked to you requirments. It will suffice for your use of evening functions over the next few months nicely. Thats what I would do.

That's another point, i'd obviously ideally like to try it on first, problem is i'm up in the north east. I'd be willing to travel to leeds though, COS (Collection of Styles right?) is down in london isn't it?

I used to use a tailor on Duke St in Darlington, always had some nice cloth and was a reasonable guy, can't for the life of me remember his name and google offers no suggestion (maybe no longer!!) Binns for Crombie in the sale, you'll pick up a 500 to 600 suit for around 275. Or perhaps try

looks nice, not sure on the Quality.

There is also an online tailor where you can design your own suit, haven't purchased from them though. If I can find the url I'll post.

Sweet, thanks Stanley might have a look into that. As an example i loved the style and cut on Mark Ronson's black suit last night.

That looks like the one but…."Made to measure suits range in price, depending on the type of cloth, starting at £600." Out of my price range unfortunately.

pretty sure that ronson suit is silk, which is why it's got that slouchy look, but should be fairly easy to pick up a single breasted black suit t'up north. i could take a look in binns at the w/e if you like.

Got a couple of weddings to go to next month so need a suit (or two).

Literally havent worn a suit in god knows how long and never to a wedding (only been to a couple when I was really young).

So, I havent got a clue what to get. What kind of style/colour do people generally wear to weddings?

Don't want to spend a ridiculous amount because i'll probably never need a suit again for a while, but getting jackets to fit me from the usual cheap places might be a problem because ive got pretty long arms (i'm 6'4"). Where would be best to go?

If they're in the summer i would say get a light coloured one. Saw an article on some in a magazine last weekend and it had one in like the one brad pitt wears in oceans 13, can't find a pic but it looked real nice. Go for a single button too.

As it's only April, you won't need a lightweight or light coloured suit. You might consider going for a sharkskin type finish to make it look less like a business suit.
you don't mention your budget, however TK Maxx is a worthwhile stop, as they can occasionally have some great deals, barring that, the usual high st places…. M&S have some surprisingly good styles.
If you want to spend over £200, then a trip to Bicester may be worthwhile as there's plenty of shops flogging suits there. Also a 10% off voucher you might find via google.
Make sure you shoes which match the quality of your suit.

Still on my own search for a suit. Found one that seems about right for me here http://www.savilerowco.com/products/men/men-classic-slim-cut-suits/slim-cut-contemporary-suit/pid-msuit15brn It describes the suit as brown, but it's blatantly grey/charcoal in the pics. Am i missing something here or are they wrong?
