I hate all that `alternative hip hop` bullshit, madvillian, MF Doom, madlib, JDilla or whatever, rapping about food and shit, its fucking dumb and trying too hard to be different.

Laughing out loud

Because selling drugs, tough guy machismo and shooting people isn't trying too hard. Straight-forward, generic, hardcore "hip-hop" sound for me is pretty dull.

MF Doom is a timeless genius, , slick delivery of random and obscure nonsense-tinged knowledge and leftfield beats. As for Madlib one of the most ultra-productive producer/MC throwing together some of the most ultra-rough and grimy loop-based hip-hop today. The loops he finds are ridiculous, with jazz and soul getting presented in some of the craziest production going.

i agree with milspex, all those guys are so overrated and all their songs sound exactly the same, pure hypebeast music. doom was amazing back in the day though

I could say the same for hardcore hip-hop nowadays, where's the passion where's the fucking content?. Its simply a checklist of things they tick off.

EDIT:Jedi Mind Tricks has been mention already.

This is what I`m talking about, who cares about `left field beats?` All I care about is good beats personally.

Heres something that hasnt been mentioned yet: Most of the Major Force catalogue, those guys couldnt rap for shit but they knew good beats. some of the rapping is genuinely hilarious though. Takagi Kan had mad style.

Switching it up and doing something different from the standard. RZAs rough beats on 36 chambers was different from the smooth sound that was dominating mainstream hiphop and no one can argue with that. It's jus refreshing hearing beats with a different feel - those left field beats feel fresh. They're good too.

And dilla did great stuff with tribe and pharcyde and de la
