Have you tried anything to diagnose/rectify the problems you're having? My gf's newish macs was running v slow so I told her to get Onyx and run all the maintenance/cleaning - did the trick…

Also if your hard drive is full or has less than 20% free space it will run really slowly! Onyx is really good I told my Girlfriend to use it as she had a similar problem as Voltaire's Girlfriend. Also us Monolingual to get rid of language files that you don't need, you'd be surprised at how much is freed up by it! Got's lots of crap on your desktop, tidy that up so you the least amount possible on it, that also helps a little!

Cheers. Do you have an opinion on the various processors on offer with the iMac? Are the Quad Cores better, simple as that?

shego - free up as much space as possible, back everything up then re-install the OS. Did that with my PowerBook a year ago and it started running so much faster again.

Get quad core if you can afford it, I would personally. The C2D will be faster for most apps right now but as more applications are being designed to use multiple cores that will change in the near future. It's the more 'future proof' choice.

Good comparison here: http://gizmodo.com/5407204/benchmarked-the-quad+core-i7-imac-is-super-fast

Will be a massive leap from the G4 powerbook Smiling

To future-proof yourself you should try and get yourself a Mac with the best processor possible, Quad Core is the way to go. Of course pump in as much RAM as you can afford too but don't get it from Apple, try Crucial instead and put in in yourself, it's quite easy!

Upgrade your graphics card at a later date, say when you upgrade to the next version of CS. Programs of this nature won't take advantage of the GPU yet but will do in the future. Unless you're film editing or producing 3D don't worry too much about it.

Mac prices seem to have gotten extremely expensive over the last couple years. iMacs used to be great value but now the cheapest iMac is £969, only a couple years ago wasn't the 20" £769 or there abouts? The entry level plastic macbooks used to be £699, now £816.

And £2k for the cheapest Mac Pro. Puzzled

I could do with a new one before April but the prices are harder to swallow than ever before.

I agree I just recently got myself a Macbook Pro and MacPro, bloody painful! I can understand why Apple charge a premium over other PC manufacturers and agree to the maxim you pay for what you get but their prices have slowly been creeping up, possibly since the iPhone/iTouch has been out. Even though the iPhone has been an undoubted success maybe the profit margins are a little lower on that line so to make up that short fall they bump it up on the Mac (especially the Mac Pro's) product line which is now one of their smallest sellers even though it's still obviously very profitable, they still want to see a certain percentage, less being sold means higher prices. The problem with that is that they're pricing themselves out of the market. Computers are so much more sophisticated these days that most plebs only need a simple notebook to do what they need. So £816 for a Macbook or £400 for a PC notebook! My girlfriend who is a student struggled to pay for a Macbook and that was with a work discount 3 years ago, if in the same situation now; forget about it!

Mac's will be always more expensive but it is boarding on the silly!

In my opinion if you want a desktop pc you're silly to buy a mac, the prices for the hardware you get are apalling. You can even (pretty easily actually) install os x on a pc, so there's little argument left there (also windows 7 is really really good). In terms of laptops I think it's a bit different as the design features etc make more of a regular difference.

Every time I watch a vid online or use a site like http://audiomap.tuneglue.net/ my macbook slows right down and the fan comes on and stays on for ages. I've read somewhere about taking the battery out and pressing down power for 5 seconds so I've done that but it's just the same. Even if a video has fully loaded, it'll play for a bit then start jumping and the computer becomes unresponsive. Haven't got a clue why, I upgraded to 2 GB of ram not too long ago. Could it be something to do with Chrome?

Anyone have any suggestions to what else I could try to make the fan stop going all the time?

Cheers.

Try something other than Chrome first.. but sounds like your graphics card is struggling/dying
