That's just reminded me of the other problem I had and why I was using Chrome in the first place, I downloaded the latest version of Firefox and installed etc, but it just kept opening then quitting, wouldn't even stay in the dock… I'll try with Safari - thanks.

I've read somewhere about taking the battery out and pressing down power for 5 seconds so I've done that but it's just the same. Even if a video has fully loaded, it'll play for a bit then start jumping and the computer becomes unresponsive. Haven't got a clue why, I upgraded to 2 GB of ram not too long ago. Could it be something to do with Chrome?

Anyone have any suggestions to what else I could try to make the fan stop going all the time?

Cheers.

Have you tried anything to diagnose/rectify the problems you're having? My gf's newish macs was running v slow so I told her to get Onyx and run all the maintenance/cleaning - did the trick…

Also if your hard drive is full or has less than 20% free space it will run really slowly! Onyx is really good I told my Girlfriend to use it as she had a similar problem as Voltaire's Girlfriend. Also us Monolingual to get rid of language files that you don't need, you'd be surprised at how much is freed up by it! Got's lots of crap on your desktop, tidy that up so you the least amount possible on it, that also helps a little!

Just a little restricted with certain things being all in one, don't get me wrong I own an iMac and it's great but you've always got the problem that if something goes wrong you gotta send the whole machine of rather than just the thing that's fucked.

Not great example but say the web cam goes wrong, whole imac back to get it fixed and you're stuck with work needing to be done, not good.

There used to be other things like limited memory expansion, usb / firewire ports etc. all may be different now with the new release imacs not checked recently.

The are good for space saving though, and probably the only reason I'd want one over a pro tbh.

I would have to concur; the iMac is great but it is a little restricted in terms of expansion, it's engineered like a notebook, there is only so much you can do with them!

Exactly - I can't justify spending on a Mac Pro, and in terms of what it can do the iMac is more than enough for what I need.

My PowerBook is my only computer just now, so I already have the expandability limits / all in one problem, and the new iMac will blow my PowerBook out of the water on a spec level.

Plus I'll be keeping the PowerBook for her indoors so I'll always be able to continue working if the worst happens (touch wood) (no homo).

The downsides of the iMac are also the appeal of it. It is a pain changing anything other than the memory, you have to remove the LCD panel to change the hard drive. I don't like sending off my computers to 'get fixed' either. Leaving all my personal information and immense porn collection in the hands of a total stranger is something I'd never do. Puzzled

Apple don't make an affordable, expandable, upgradable desktop computer and never have. I wish they would but until they do the only real choices are the iMac and Mac Pro.

As long as you're touching your own! Smiling

If you're happy using the PowerBook but you notice it's struggle a bit get the iMac, it will be a huge jump in performance and as long you don't do anything major like edit the next hollywood blockbuster you'll be fine.

Mac Pro hasn't seen a revision since March 2009 and the price remains the same today as it did then. Puzzled

I've got plenty of free space on my hard drive and only one or two files on the desktop most of the time. Also, my computer isn't sluggish, it's only when I'm watching stuff online or something that the fan starts up and it becomes unresponsive.

How do I see the info about my graphics card? Thanks for the help!

95% of their business is portable devices, and in 2003 dropped computers from the company name

Do you have lots and lots of windows tabs open in a browser? That could be a problem.

Get iStatPro it's a top widget that tells you whats happening under the hood.

Also clear any browsing data you may have, caches, cookies etc. If there are loads in there that will slow down your browser.

Apple Menu > About This Mac > More Info…

or just go Utilities > System Profiler…

Exactly my point, Apple in the last Keynote made a big deal how most of their business is in portable devices; MacBook Pros down to the Shuffle. They're shifting their attention away from Professional desktop machines and aiming their products at the consumer not prosumer!

are you on safari? if so change to firefox instead. The fan comes on because of flash player and it eats the cpu while safari also occupying quite a bit. Changing to firefox does the trick for me, though it still happens every now and then its much better than before.

Theres also a program which stops all flash contents loading unless you click on it, its easier than it sounds and does help a little. Dont remember the name of it but I'll let you know when I find out.

Firefox with Adblock Plus brought my PowerBook G4 back to life on the web!

Get a nice Mac-like theme while you're at it:
