The Tiger wrote: I asked if they could replace it and they told me that because I was using Firefox as my browser and not Safari that they didn't support it and therefore it was not 'their' fault. Cunts! I am gonna go back and push a little harder as I was in a rush when I picked it up.

Just wondered if anyone else had experienced similar problems?

It is preposterous for them to say such crap as using Firefox causes it. My experience with Apple is that if you insist talking to a supervisor or manager , you always get better results than with a foot soldier. In the old days all the store staff were more empowered and resolved issues quicker and without quibble. These days it is a different story.
To give you an example, last week my mother-in-law went to Regent Street store as her ipod touch wasn't holding charge anymore just a little after a year of use. The guy she spoke to told her that as it is not under warrantly she needs to buy a new one. He also had the audacity to say to her that these things are meant to be used and replaced when the battery dies. I know for a fact that they have a battery replacement program but in order for mother in law to be convinced I called Apple support and spoke to them when she was present. They offered a battery exchange for £82 , which the tosser in the store should have done in the first place.

Don't give up, be polite and you will get results I promise!

Good luck!

Why do you need to run Win7 on a Mac just to surf the web and download torrents? Puzzled

Just took my girlfriends MacBook Air to the Genius Bar. It's got a broken hinge and they said it'll cost £334.80.
It works fine, just one hinge is broken, so it needs to be supported when using it.

Advice? Just sell it on eBay stating it has a damaged hinge? Doesn't really seem worth spending that much money on it Sad

You could try contacting one of the non-official Mac repair places, eg:

http://www.cambridgelaptoprepair.co.uk/blog/2012/03/macbook-air-mac-book-repairs/

http://www.macrepairs.co.uk/index/page/id/51/

http://www.victorialaptoprepair.co.uk/mac-repair/macbook-air-hinge-repair.htm

Or do it yourself - http://www.powerbookmedic.com/wordpress/2009/10/08/how-to-replace-the-macbook-air-hinges-and-lcd Jawdropping!

How old is it? Seems like there was a manufacturing issue with the hinges on some first generation models - http://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/6714/Can+I+buy+a+new+hinge+for+my+MacBook+air

We took it for an indy place first, and they said about 250, so tried our luck with apple. I'm not sure what model/year. He took it apart and said there's a wire that is damaged too - which is a part of the hinge.
Could try and give it a go myself, but obviously don't want to make it worse or completely break it

Edit: it's from 2009, so one of the first ones I think? I'll give one of those companies a go, not holing my breath Sad

You should get her to go to the Apple store again or even a different one and just try your luck. I'm pretty sure they can do almost anything for free at their discretion.

just get her to go to bare different apple stores. eventually they will replace it as a "gesture of goodwill". honestly when i bought a smashed ipad off some idiot at my old school i tried the reading store and they were having none of it, then tried the covent garden one when they were really quiet (literally right before it closed) and the girl replaced it straight up

I second that.. especially if you get to deal with a manager.

Plus she's a French model Jordan, just get her to flutter her eyelashes at said manager and say something in an outrageously clichéd accent.

Do it yourself, really is easy. Just need a copy of SuperDuper and something like this then clone your hdd to the ssd and swap them. Took about 20 mins when I did mine.

Thanks,
I won't bother with the retina since I use an external display 90% of the time at home anyway…

best thing about the retina display is using using them at the scaled resolution i.e having 1920 x 1200 on a 15 inch screen vs the older 17. That, and they don't have the awful glare problems like the older glossy screens.
can use the max resolutions under windows too.
