If its an external drive you could try getting the drive out and putting it in another enclosure.

Data recovery can be seriously expensive, I just had to accept there wasn't anything worth that much on mine when it died.

Laughing out loud - they are so shit. i've just emailed about 9 companies for data recovery quotes, a bird knocked it yesterday, fell about 4 inches and it's dead out now - that should be in best worst actually

I use a docking station with a SATA HDD which I back up as a bootable drive with SuperDuper - that way if the drive goes on my mac I just stick the backup straight in and it's as if nothing's happened. If you regularly take the external out and about a lot, then this would probably be too fiddly a solution, I know..

(Docking station is Icybox and HDD is Seagate - can recommend both - been running for 18 months solid with no problems)

As for recovering data, diskwarrior might help (think I have a copy somewhere, PM me)

I got data recovered a few years back on a HDD. All my design work/portfolio work so had to fork out. Worked out to be about £400 in the end.

Time machine on the Mac for the win, with additional backup of the time machine on an external.

Taking the only copy of everything you have portable is a big no no.

optical / magnetic media is dead.

Anyway mac is all about ring fencing, even installing anything outside of the Appstore requires specific authorisation and huge warnings like "this will damage your mac"

even my idiot mum has requested a tablet for xmas, this is the world we live in now.

I always wanted apple to adopt blu-ray but now I think they made the right choice. Physical media is dead, but I've still never ever bought downloadable movies or music so something still isn't right.

I love my mum, but she is stupid, its more about why under the influence of market forces a 65 year old woman desires a tablet.

If you think about though, if they included a dvd drive, it would make the machine thicker. And would you want that for the sake of using it once to load creative suite?

the thickness is pretty deceiving imo.

its proper thin at the ends but its no thinner than the old one as it is large at the back as it curves,
