MacBook Pro won't turn on. Only option to go to the dreaded apple store? It's about 2-3 years old, what will they presumably do/will they charge me?

Just spilt half a glass of wine on my MacBook Pro keyboard Sad was watching a movie, laptop was pretty hot. Made a buzz sound. I turned it off and turned it upside down.. Took back off and wiped it down (wasn't too much liquid) I was going to take battery out but haven't got the tools till I'm in work tomorrow..

Read about leaving it 3 days beogre turning back on? Anything else I should do?

The screen went off but the sound was still playing front the film.. Any chance it may survive?

I was too curious to see if it was working, so after leaving it to dry out today I turned it on.. to my amazement it seems fine!

Been reading horror stories all day on the net, people saying 1-5% chance it will still work. Leave for a couple weeks to dry out etc.

It was literally right into the middle of the keyboard took the back off and the base place was covered in wine.. guess there could be some issues and corrosion ahead.. but really pleased its not totally fucked. Thinking my quick reactions of turning off and unplugging etc might have saved me Smiling

Anyone wanting to buy a mac book pro? Excellent condition.

Get yourself one of these:

http://kbcovers.com/clear-transparent-keyboard-cover/

Best investment I've ever made.

Also stops dead skin/dust/crumbs falling behind the keys.

I'm pretty sure mine did this before.. But does anyone elses back lit keyboard light up unevenly? Mines brighter down the middle..

Pretty sure its unrelated to the spill as the place where the wine went is the brightest!

its a 2011 model so if anyone has one and could check that would be great Smiling

The older it gets, the more uneven the lighting gets as some of the LEDs lose their brightness, and sometimes even a few mm difference in keys will means some light leaks on some keys but not others - it's all good

I did the exact same thing to my macbook pro, half a glass of wine over the keyboard - works completely fine but the under key lights on the right hand side don't work anymore. I had to get the hard drive replace a year later in a completely unrelated incident and the guy at the shop said it completely stank of booze when he took the cover off…

Do your your keyboard lights not work at all mate or are they just dimmer right hand side? All mine still work was just varying brightness..

Haha did you not take the case off yours at all when it happened? I cleaned most the wine out of mine straight away, if left it would have gone all sticky I'd imagine!

Really surprised as googling it there are few success stories after a wine spill I to keyboard.. Although it does seem a lot of people like to scaremonger over it..

My Macbook pro is performing like a big turd. Its only a few years old and it heats up very quick and and sounds like its going to take off

Hard drive is 3/4 full and Im going to have a tidy up but should it really be so sluggish?

Got a brand new Air but I want to keep that separate for work and this Pro for wanking/torrents anything that I dont really want on my work one

How much RAM has it got? I upgraded mine to 16GB and it made a big difference, easy enough to do.

Might be worth deleting all the shite you dont need/getting an external drive to keep it on. Could even do a clean install of Mavericks so its 'as new'?

Would go for a clean install (format and reinstall OSX) before investing in more RAM. If you're not running Photoshop or any other Adobe product, 4GB is enough for basic web browsing, watching movies, email and Microsoft Word etc.

If you do wish to upgrade, I recommend getting some Corsair RAM

http://www.corsair.com/en-gb/memory-finder

and then installing it yourself as it'll be far cheaper than doing it via Apple.
