if my macbook charger is broken, do i need to book a genius appointment or just take it in for a replacement via applecare?

i just went in and they replaced it when mine broke

also might be worth taking your actual macbook too, as they tested mine to make sure it was the charger that was broke and not the macbook itself

mine broke through normal wear and tear not long ago. no available appointments on website for either london store so just went in. first person i spoke to before joining queue to get seen at genius bar said it should be fine if i have applecare. i got fannied about waiting for ages, then when i did see a genius they said normally normal wear and tear isnt usually covered but because i'd waited ages her manager had ok'd it. so basically if they try and fob you off just kick up a stink and they'll eventually give it. you'll have to queue up though

Cheers for the info Jordan, went in, had a 45 min wait for an appointment but they swapped it no questions asked. Considering I trod on the charger and broke it, that's not bad at all.
For the 45 minutes I just worked on my laptop in the shop.
I really don't see how people are getting a bum deal with apple customer service.

I have no idea what I would have done if I had a samsung laptop.. Send off the charger? Be without my laptop for a few weeks?

Not even kidding but even a big lump like me could tread on any non-apple charger I've ever had without it breaking.

Apple do some things really well but they definitely have a lot of flaws too.
Writing this on my Macbook Air, first mac. It's astonishingly light, I was picking up some Chromebooks one-handed yesterday and they weighed 3-4 times as much. It looks fantastic, and the backlit keys are lovely. The trackpad is very nice to use and gestures are great, although they don't always work on non-Safari browsers, and Safari isn't great.
It's not any faster than my 5 year old Sony, although the always on bit is nice on the mac.
Don't like the OS though, and quite often find myself using the Sony because it's so much nicer to use. Some of that is probably down to knowing Windows for years but not all.

You do know you can put an SSD in a Windows laptop too?

I didn't buy the Macbook for speed TBH (and it's 2013 not 2014) was happy with the speed of the Sony, just wanted something more portable, and the Sony is getting a bit tatty.

Sisters Mac has the grey folder with a question mark on start up. Start up file corrupted? And is a genius appointment best way to about it?

Startup from your Mac OS X install disc (or USB stick Yosemite install if you created one) and use Disk Utility to verify/repair the disk. If that fails then reinstall OS X and then restore the files lost using Time Machine.

yes obviously, but i just struggle to believe that a 5 year old laptop is faster.. 5 years ago 1GB of ram was amazing wasnt it? the mac OS also uses less ram so is typically quicker
