ok, I haven't quite got my head around the internet on phones, I've never used it before, I know nothing of how it works, so could someone please explain it to me in simple language - what I would like to know is:

the "official" O2 iPhone contract comes with "unlimited data transfer" - does this mean I can connect to the internet from anywhere at all via the O2 network, I don't have to be in a wifi zone, and it's all inclusive?

a normal O2 contract comes with a 1Mb a month allowance - if I only go online in wifi places does this count towards my 1Mb?

I know nothing! Laughing out loud

(b) a normal O2 contract comes with a 1Mb a month allowance - if I only go online in wifi places does this count towards my 1Mb?

a = fair use which is 2GBytes per month its from anywhere as in a mix of wifi (through 02 services) and use of edge services which is just like talking o a phone. Don't know what edge services are like outside of london and the like.

b = the 1MByte is being sent by gprs and is normally used for text messages / MMS

you cant go online in wifi places using a normal phone, you need one with an 802.11 b/g/n trnasciever and access to the VPN linked ot the mac address of the phone etc. just like a lap top.

hence the £35+ contract is there for a reason. If you get a unlocked iphone you will need your own contract to access wifi hotspots, and the data allowance as its on gprs will last a very short time if its 1Mb per month etc. 3 uses '3G' for data but the iphone doesnt have that transciever.

iphone on a PAYG or other contract will be crippled to no more than a phone with very weak data services *unless you buy your own PAYG wifi access

cheers, that's exactly what I needed to know

there's apparently a 3G iPhone in the pipeline but I would imagine it will be the end of next year before the UK gets it

I think I'm leaning towards getting an official one now. my current O2 contract is shit anyway, so moving to the iPhone will be an improvement for me, just not as big an improvement as if I chose another phone

The 3g iPhone is due out in 2008 in the US, the reason that it wasnt brought out before was due to power problems.

Im thinking about getting one over from the US, all depends on what the new firmware will bring as the unlocking software might have to be updated. Aint no way youll get me on a 24 month contract, 18 months was a test of patience in itself.

Was doing yours pretty painless the_fear?
