Interesting.

So is it worth taking on punt in that sense? Essentially you are covered by the insurance automatically if you chose to mark down?

I always have avoided marking down to avoid losses if the parcels goes missing. Somehow the idea of using national postal service, even if it is as efficient as Japan, with a reduced value seems a bit risky.

On the flip side, I have just been hit with a £170 import fee for a 55k Yen parcel. Cry

Over the last 15 years I've had loads of high ticket items (some over £1k) proxied from Japan using EMS (delivered by Parcel Force here in the UK), all declared with values of no more than £20, and have had no experience with damaged/missing items.

It is a risk, but because it's tracked at every point, little chance of it going missing, and even if it does, it should be relatively easy to trace.

they charge a £12 fee right away don’t they? Handling fee? Mind one time my parcel was just over and got charged 90p customs and had to pay £12.90 load of shite.

Yeah they love a handling fee. That's the problem with Parcelforce. I feel like if UPS/FedEx etc. were handling it they would be less likely to charge as they are managing end to end, rather than picking up what is sent over.

May have to go the other route next time and mark down. I have no issue with the retailer marking down for me, as I feel like the risk is taken on their part and I haven't specifically requested it.

If I order through a Proxy ( hesitating between Zenmarket and Stylistics….I’m buying from an individual not a shop so imagine Stylistics has a better chance of succeeding no?) and mark down the value for customs but pay with PayPal goods, am I covered by PayPal in case of a lost package?

If you mark the value low for customs then it’s your risk, if it gets lost that’s what Stylistics or whoever is proxying would be able to claim back from the shipping company and what you would be refunded

Can’t really expect the Proxy to foot the loss if a parcel goes missing, even if paid through PayPal goods

I’ve never had any problems with shipping from Japan or had any parcels lost, I always use EMS

Had a package sent via EMS last Friday & arrived yesterday so no discernible difference in delivery times. Value was marked low so no customs hold up

EMS still looks open to UK. I've got a package on the way via fedex which is looking ok, currently in France depot before UK bound.
