saw tree of life tonight - i hadnt read too much about it before, and ive never seen any other mallick films.
i thought he captured being a young kid pretty well and the whole film was really amazingly shot. i didnt like the overtly catholic/christian message and also it fucking went on and on and on. all the acting was pretty impressive, but there was no point in sean penn being in it, completely wasted. worth going to see though, dont watch it on your laptop.
shitloads of people left in the first twenty five mins - and i was in an 'independent' cinema - i dont think ive ever seen that amount of people leave a cinema in my life.

I thought Tree of Life was incredible. If you just accept before you watch it that it's going to be pretty bloody indulgent then you can let yourself be drawn into it all.
The section at the beginning and end, particularly THAT bit, is very audacious and can seem a bit lolwhut?! But it's sort of like a palette cleanser that takes you in and out of the main narrative in the middle.
I can't think of many contemporary films that tackle such a big idea in such an epic way - Donnie Darko?! - and it's almost touching 2001 territory. I could totally see why people would hate it and think it's a bit like that John Lewis advert though, and agree with the above that Sean Penn's ten minutes worth of stern look didn't add a lot.

you gotta join them together once downloaded and play the avi file in vlc or something similar. If it's easier here's a megaupload link
