you can always run an antivirus before unzipping the file? I was going to ask what the advantages are of using these other sharing systems cause ive only really experienced torrents.

Can someone explain usenet?

At the moment thinking of getting a uploaded.to account, seems like the one that's popping up most.

I agree with Sayword, not a huge fan of torrents either just for the risk factor.

Or use http://www.sandboxie.com/

Usenet is something you have to pay for, you can either pay a monthly sub which is unlimited downloads, or PAYG. I'm with astraweb and pay $25 for 180gb a time, which suits me fine.

I then use nzbdrop on my Mac to download/search for .nzbs. Sometimes I use Newzbin, but since it got closed down/reopened it's not as good as it used to be.

Usenet has the benefit of offering SSL connections, which essentially encrypts the data you're sending and receiving from Usenet. A bit like when you use a Https:// website when checking out or banking. Your ISP can only see that you're downloading large chunks of data, but cannot identify what sort of data it is. For all they know you could be downloading games you've purchased over Steam or movies from iTunes or other legal online content.

Benefit with Usenet is that it's all hosted on various "farms" around the world and it isn't a torrent based setup, whereby you're downloading off other people. So for this reason Usenet will always maximise your internet connection. For example I'm on a 21mb connection and I download at around 2.2Mbps at all times, anytime of the day, any day of the week. This translates to being able to get a 720p (seldom bother with 1080p) 5gb movie in less than 30 minutes. Also 99.9% of the stuff on Usenet are virus free. The only exceptions are big game releases where some guy thinks it's clever to put a trojan amongst the files. But these soon get "nuked" anyway.

While torrents are free, you essentially get what you pay for.
