I've been keeping a film diary on insta, if anyone is into cinema (bit arthouse leaning) and needs some inspiration for lockdown viewing then give it a follow, it might be of interest: www.instagram.com/living__image

this was surprisingly cringey, Spike Jonze direction, actual Beastie Boys hosting, what could suck? But it kinda sucked for some reason.. maybe coz the image I had of them was different to the reality..some good footage from their Australian tour I remember giving my friend shit coz he said they were awesome but to me then they were try hard white rappers..
Musically tho, I heard someone on a podcast recently argue that Beastie Boys can tie with REM for greatest ever American band. I kinda agreed with his points why - all actually born in the USA, long lived, acclaimed, progressed a lot but never got "bad", influential, mainstream and underground success and toured hard to back it all up.
Every other band you can think of fails on one of these points. Credence didn't last long enough, Beach Boys got to be a joke in the end, Grateful Dead is too much of a cult..etc etc

just grabbed it on Pirate Bay
Recently was watching a lot the Norm Show, never seen it all before, of which there's a decent rip on Pirate Bay (Fuck paying AUD$400 for the OOP DVDs)
That made me rewatch my Dirty Work LD. Then I watched The Wild Life (1982) LD.
Then I watched the SNL Adam Sandler compilation on DVD
Then some of the 13th season of It's Always Sunny
All highly recommended
Been trying to find a decent quality rip of Larry Sanders Show, I ripped all the Garry Shandling Show DVDs from the library. The LSS rip going around is horrible quality, unwatchable to me. Library doesn't have it so might have to actually buy the DVDs, too many good cameos from that era

^ yeah, i can't be trusted or listened to when it comes to bands, so don't listen to me, but it certainly did make you cringe. i think it's more of the nature of them doing show after show of this docu performance which forces the nostalgia to bubble up. i had heard of the band before, but the first song i really liked from them was intergalactic planetary.
thoughts after about 30 min in - didn't know lenah dunham was in the beastie boys group at first. the whole making of the band is just white privilege. no, it's an attempt at whitesploitation (on simmons behalf), but because of the dynamics at play in america, what rose to the top was not the cream of the cream, but the most vanilla.
they seem like nice guys and all, so i don't mean it as offense.

Cool Flaskett, yeah the actual history was interesting, Rick Reuben and Russel Simmons then living in that LA mansion but the delivery format was the awkward/contrived part, woulda been better as just a straight video and a voice over.
I never really paid attention to em through the years after I paid out my friend for liking em. And I knew the Fight for your right song and video.
Then yeah I saw the intergalactic video circa 2000 and knew they were just "cool" but I still didn't get into em
Then in '04 in the master bedroom that I'd inheritted from Koreans in my own Beasite Boys style crazy share-mansion I sat on my King sized bed (I didn't always have a single) with my cute ass Jap girlfriend and my Wall mounted CRT and tuned into Letterman at around 12:30AM as usual after finishing my night fill shift at Coles, showering and fucking.
I saw one of the greatest performances I'd ever seen on Letterman or anywhere. Then I knew I had to respect the Beastie Boys. And you saw how much they'd evolved since Fight for your right. Just great performers

Now I've been feeling for a while I finally have to pay respect with some nice Jap release concert DVDs and SHM CDs to do it right. Fill in the gaps. I'll ignore the docu-performance..

yeah man it was good shit.
Then again I was playin PS2 last night and blastin Beastie Boys Anthology through my headphones and it's all good shit but then I put on my favorite hip hop album of all time, just to reset my baseline, The War Report by Capone N Noreaga, and of course it just blows anything by the Beastie Boys away completely.
Maybe I didn't miss out on that much by not following em, but I did, I missed out on something special. They had something..
