Think the new matrix was alright in just how meta it was, like they even say it in Warner Bro's wanted a remake/reboot, it was going to happen regardless.
However from the film the pretty much redefined action films since the 00's, the action was fucking terrible, especially when we now have films like The Raid, as Neo was basically reduced to being a mandatory force shield.
20 years improvement in technology, hundreds of millions in budget for a poor (visual) imitation, especially when the old film is shown so much in the background and various flashbacks.
Hope the next one fixes the problems this one has, but I don't have high hopes.
Also yeah Swan Song was good, as was Mother/Android.

Can't believe how bad the new matrix was. Casting was laughable, action scenes worse than the matrix 2 and the story extremely convoluted yet paper thin at the same time.

Don’t Look Up. Really enjoyed this. Got to take it with a pinch of salt but of course that’s what McKay was going for. Some great acting and the film flows really well. Also it’s definitely how the world would react to a similar event. It’s not even that far a stretch of the old noggin to believe the actions in the movie.

Been properly slumming it for the last six months, but a few recent watches:
Petite Maman - new from Céline Sciamma (Portrait of a Lady on Fire). Up to her usual top-tier standard. Has that Studio Ghibli magical feeling about it, and clocks in at a lean 72 mins.
When Harry Met Sally - I loved it the first two times I'd seen it but another rewatch has made me realise it's one of my favourite films of all time. The film all romcoms should aspire to be.
So I Married An Axe Murderer - early 90's Mike Myers, really entertaining stuff. Shame he doesn't do much at the moment, I'm still holding out for an Austin Powers reboot.

Agreed don't know why it was on so many best of lists. Reminded me of berbarian sound studio, which I didn't even like that much!

Casting all those comedic actors was pretty distracting too, felt fresher when Ben Wheatley was doing it years ago

Yeah was a big fan of Titane when I watched a few months back.
Just watched Red Rocket - lots of fun. A bit like a cross between Uncut Gems and an old GTA cutscene. First film I've seen by Sean Baker who also did The Florida Project.

Agree with Swede 'Don't Look Up' deffo straight to stream spec.
Jonah the best bit.
Watched 'The Lost Daughter' as a fair bit of Oscar buzz going around. Was a slightly awkward/uncomfortable watch. I assume thats what Maggie Gyllenhall was going for. Good performances but not a 'great' film. Somewhere in the middle for me.
