Going to be moving into my missus' gaff in Leicester next month - it's only a one bedroom flat so will be looking for somewhere else to move sharpish.

I don't know the area at all, coming from Newcastle and having lived in Leamingotn for the past year or so. What areas should I be checking out? Is there anywhere like Moseley in Birmingham in Leicester or the surrounding areas (i.e relaxed/ arty/ music venues/ nice pubs/ nice restaurants/ no students or Leicester's finest locals)?

Queens Road area is quite nice and slightly bohemian. Braunstone Gate's pretty decent for a night out, not too studenty and has a slightly older crowd. I don't really go out in the city centre any more but the Orange Tree's always fairly lively, Taps has been the hype bar to go to but may not be 'in' anymore, The Basement is decent for late drinking, run by the same people that run the Orange Tree/ O Bar etc. There's bound to be loads of bars/ clubs I don't know about as I'm getting old, don't go out as much and I'm not cool.

Go to Mem Saab for the business lunch- 2 courses for about £8 and it's an excellent curry, if that's your thing (and really if you don't like curry, Leicester isn't for you) you should also try Shimla Pinks and the Martin Inn, both excellent for Indian food. Melton Road has loads of curry houses too, with loads of veggie options as it has a massive Asian community there. Entropy on Narborough Road is good for more traditional British food, it's not Michelin star stuff but they use seasonal stuff and it's all really fresh and well used ingredients. The Font is good for a Sunday Roast too.

how old are you fat cap?

Leicester is an alright place as long as you don't go to the scum places. There is lots of scum but they are easily avoided.

Didn't know rira was from leicester.

I'd add The Pub on New Walk is good if you want somewhere to watch sports. Friendly staff, decent grub and a massive array of obscure beers.

I think The Criterion is still good for proper drinkers too?

As far as I know, Queens Road is still the place to live for people our age (I'm 33 too) who are a bit more cultured?

For somewhere to live then you probably want to be heading for the Clarendon Park area or the "West End" (narborough road and surrounding).

Both have their own little areas of Bars/restaurants and are about a 30 minute walk from the city centre.

I think Clarendon Park is a bit smarter these days but you'll also pay more.

The West End is more convenient if you need to use the motorway on a regular basis.

Yeah, we paid around £125,000 for a 2 bed terraced house in the West End, the same in the Clarendon Park area was about £140,000 when we were buying almost 5 years ago. Friends over the road just sold their place for about £125,000 so it's looking like we won't make any money on our house when we do eventually sell up.

Some great shouts here thanks lads although I should add that I was more looking for areas to live rather than socialise - keep the suggestions coming though as it sounds like theres still a fair few places for me to discover.

I've been out in Leicester a fair amount recently and quite like it - the Orange Tree/ The Globe are my pubs of choice at the minute- never really found a great restaurant yet but Entropy is pretty nice and fairly near my girlfriend's place. Any other suggestions definitely welcomed to avoid getting dragged to the shopping arcade chain places again! The Font definitely looks like a good shout.

@ Colizhun - I'm 33 - starting to get too old for clubbing and prefering nice pubs/ ales/ restaurants more nowadays, although would probably hit up the odd house night if there's any about early on.

Gone are the days when you could make a decent bit of money on those houses. I bought mine off narborough road in 2000 for £48k and sold it in 2007 for £115k (csb etc etc).

Nice one - will check out Clarendon Park on the weekend and have a look around Narbrough Rd aswell to see whats up

…hopefully get a chacne to pop in The Font for a couple of sly ones as well - looks like a great shout and can't believe I've missed it so far. Mem Saab looks like a good shout for a curry too- think there's one here in Leamington (if it's part of the same chain) as well but never made it so far.

@Colizhun - not been in the Sophbeck yet but I've heard many a story! I'm more of an afternoon drinker these days and start retreating home in a drunken mess before I feel too out of place amongst the youngsters/ find myself slumped in a corner of a club somewhere.

Would rather go shopping in Leicester, as you can get Rick Owens, Common Projects, EG, PO etc. none of that in Nottingham or surrounding areas, but apart from that one shop the rest is pretty poor.
